| Pandora in the Crimson Shell: Ghost Urn (TV) | So-so | According to the ANN review, not very good, but entertaining and with hints of yuri. Well, that's one of the least naturally written meetings of main characters ever. I guess a main source of humor is going to be Nene's gullibility/naivete. And then there's the ecchi transformation sequence *rolleyes* I'll give it a chance, but I don't think this is going to be good. The ecchi isn't constant, but it's there pretty often, mostly from Buer. There are a few more instances of clumsy writing too. If it weren't for those this'd be a decent sci-fi/slice-of-life/action/comedy anime. Yeah, all of those in one. |
| Pani Poni Dash! (TV) | Good | It's a lot like Azumanga Daioh, only more episodic. And with many more characters. It's a lot of fun, but don't bother reading all the notes. The references are mostly to obscure manga, so if you're not a manga reader, you won't miss them really. The character designs are nice, and the personalities likeable and funny too. The OP themes are some of the best I think. Recommended to anyone who's in the mood for some comedy. |
| Paprika (movie) | Good | High quality art/animation. It shows some American influences I think, mainly in the character designs and Disney-esque dream sequences. The OP/ED theme is very nice. Hmm, the story didn't really make that much sense though. It seemed to be mostly a vehicle for the director to show off the animation and do cool/weird dream stuff. Overall, I'd say it is worth seeing once or so. |
| Paranoia Agent (TV) | Decent | Mentioned several times in the 'currently watching' thread. The synopsis looked kinda meh, but the Wikipedia entry looked like it could be worth watching. Yep, this one's definitely going to be at the cynical end of the scale. The beginning is interesting, with a sort of detective story that gets increasingly more surreal. Then after the middle there are suddenly some eps. that aren't really connected to the rest. Then the ending continues the super surreal stuff from the beginning, and clears it all up in the last five minutes. Hmm :/ It had its interesting parts, but when it gets surreal, basically anything can happen to bend the plot in whatever way suits the writer. Which isn't very good writing. |

| Patapata Hikōsen no Bōken (TV) | Good | Recommended by Marie-Antoinette and Abunai. Wow, how old is this? The art style looks ancient. That first episode sure rushed through a lot of backstory. In episode four the adventure finally begins for real. That's three episodes of 'show, don't tell'. You don't see that kind of detail in today's short anime. Hmm. The whole anime moves a little slow sometimes, but it's pretty well-written, and Jane is a likeable main character. It deserves more attention. |
| Patema Inverted (movie) | Good | An interesting and pretty movie, but with quite a few flaws. The sci-fi idea is really cool, but the setting falls apart quickly once you start to think about how it would work. The characters have so little depth that some are really just caricatures. Seriously, the only way to make the villain more over-the-top is to give him a moustache to twirl. And the story is basically a distressed damsel plot, with an almost all male cast fighting over Patema. The only other woman gets no more than a few lines and no real role. They pulled a Zelda here, because the title is misleading as well in that Patema isn't the POV character for most of the movie. All in all I'm kinda disappointed with Yoshiura. In Time Of Eve the characters all had their own little stories, so I expected better than these cardboard characters and tired plot. |
| Patema Inverted: Beginning of the Day (ONA) | Good | Basically a short excerpt from the beginning of the movie; not much to comment on one way or the other. Also misleading in that this is the only part in which only Patema is the main character. The rest of the movie she hardly co-stars with Eiji. |
| Patlabor 2: The Movie (movie 2) | Weak | Sequel to the first (+third) movie. Well, it looks like this movie is actually a proper Patlabor one, unlike that third movie. Halfway. Nagumo and especially Gotou get a lot of screen time, but the rest of the team have hardly been shown at all yet. Meh :/ I takes until the last half hour before the gang gets back together, sort of. Oh, and Nagumo was really only there to help the plot a bit now and then. It's all Gotou's story. Or at least he's the one moving things along. When you get down to it the whole plot isn't really based on anything, just an excuse to show military action. Yes, military. Labors have yet to be shown as anything other than cannon fodder. Or at all really. Well, at the end we finally get a little SV2 labor action, but it feels as pointless as this whole movie. What a waste of time. |
| Patlabor the Mobile Police (TV) | Good | 80s/90s anime has such a different vibe from this century's, doesn't it? Anyway, looks like the main cast's gender balance is about 1:3. So-so. So far (ep.8) there isn't any ongoing plot. Aside from the first three eps. you could watch the rest in any order. Ah, ep.10/11 is the first double. And there are a few more, with now and then a recurring plot element. Ep.23 is the first semi-clip ep. Wow, Takeo really plays exactly Kanuka's role. She enters the ep. after Kanuka leaves, and when Takeo is disabled, Kanuka shows up again right away. Takeo seems to get a little less screen time though. She's also a serious victim of chickification, fainting all the time. Noa has also changed from the beginning of the series. She used to be the cool-headed ace pilot, more mature than most of the team, but now she's doubting herself all the time, making mistakes because of that, and having to be told what to do by the others. Bleh. Aside from the longer Schaft plot and the occasional double ep., all eps. are standalone. They do give character background now and then though, so you'd miss out not watching them. That said though, there are some that are just plain filler. Overall, an enjoyable anime definitely worth watching. OVA2 continues the series, in particular it completes the Schaft plot. |
| Patlabor The Mobile Police (OAV 1/1988) | So-so | Alternate continuity to the TV series+OVA2. It starts off much the same as the TV series. The info-dumping is a little clumsy though, making characters come across as dumber than usual. Then a few eps. of random silliness (maybe they didn't run out of ideas for the TV series, but actually didn't have any to begin with? :þ), followed by what looks like a decent, if contrived plot. Well, it turned out to be more intrigue than action. And the last ep. was actionful, but ended kinda pointless. All in all, not a total waste, but I can't call it great either. It has good potential, but squanders it on silliness and lots-of-talk-but-no-action. Add in that the behavior of the male characters in this OVA is a lot more obnoxious than the TV series, and meh :/ |
| Patlabor the Mobile Police: The New Files (OAV 2/1990) | So-so | Sequel of the TV series, much the same really. I'm watching the eps. out of order to save the best ones (Schaft plot) for last. Well, so far these eps. are all really random/uninteresting. I guess they ran out of ideas during the TV series. But why make this OVA then? I hope the Schaft ones are at least good. Well, the Schaft eps. were okay, and the last ep. was tame, but actually had some character development (insofar as the status quo didn't change of course). All the rest of the eps. of this OVA were just pointless silliness. Overall, this continuity started off interesting, but gradually ran out of ideas. I think they should've stuck more with showing SV2's regular work and not try to do something new every ep. They also should've taken their characters more seriously and not flanderized them so much. Oota started off as just eager, but by the end he was raving mad most of the time. Noa started off only slightly insecure but very good at her job, and gradually became more and more doubtful, which made her worse at her job. Takeo was Kanuka #2 most of the time, but in some eps. got reduced to mere baggage for funny. Regarding this continuity of Patlabor, I'd recommend watching a selection of eps. from the TV series, and from this OVA only the four Schaft eps. and the last one. For reference, the Schaft (and related) eps. in the TV series are 7-10-11-(13)-20-21-28-30-31-32-33-34-35-(46)-(47). Depending on which release you have, the Schaft eps. in the OVA are either 1-2-3-4 or 1-3-5-7. Home Of The Sea are in eps. 9-(24)-42. And then there are a few eps. here and there with character background or development. |
| Patlabor WXIII (movie 3) | Not really good | Takes place between the first and second movie. It came out in 2001 however, so suddenly mobile phones, ubiquitous PCs and internet that weren't in the Patlabor world before are there. This movie is mostly about two detectives unrelated to SV2. So far I've only seen Izumi&Shinohara once and Gotou once, both very briefly. SV2 shows up again toward the end, but hardly gets any screen time. Labors also hardly feature in this movie. It's related to Patlabor only in minor details. I wonder if it was planned as an unrelated story first before having some Patlabor details added to boost interest. Lack of Patlabor aside, this movie is so-so. The plot isn't bad, but not all that captivating. It feels like the whole thing could've been a lot shorter than 1h40m, and more actionful, if the tedious sleuthing were cut out. The criminal's motivation (scientist mother preserving her dead daughter's cancer cells by fusing them with monster cells) is iffy. Can't that plot ever happen to fathers? Do female scientists always have to do this sort of thing? Meh. And did you notice that the monster was made explicitly female by giving it boobs? Because you know everything female has to have boobs. Meh again. Overall I can't recommend this movie. |
| Patlabor: The Movie (movie 1) | Good | Sequel to OVA1. As expected of a movie, the art/animation is even better than the OVA's. Very Oshii too. Like the OVA, this movie has Asuma as the main character, not Noa like the other continuity. I liked Noa better :/ The climax of the movie gives the other team members some more screen time, but overall it's mostly Shinohara and Gotou's movie, with Izumi a distant third. Not a bad plot, a good amount of action, and more likeable characterization than the OVA. |

| Penguin Girl (ONA) | Weak | Not sure I'll like this, but it got referenced a few times, so I think I'll give it a try. Well, the fanservice was really over the top (even worse than Yuru Yuri), and the story threadbare. I'll tick this off the list and forget about it, okay? |
| Pet Shop of Horrors (TV) | Decent | Hmm. What a weird story. It reminds me of the movie Gremlins, and of xxxHolic. The stories are stand-alone really. The others are more strange/exotic than horror though. |
| Petite Princess Yucie (TV) | Decent | The bulk of this anime is a nice friendship story. There are some annoying/awkward moments of princessy nature, but it's mostly nice. Then in the last two episodes, the ending is first undone with some major exposition that should've been revealed less suddenly, and then restored. All in all I think it would've been better to have the ending at 24 eps. |
| Phantasy Star Online 2: Episode Oracle (TV) | Decent | Ah, it seems this actually covers PSO2's story. At least the first ep. matched a lot of what Andrea's video included. Except with more detail. This is 25 eps. long, so either the story is a lot longer than I expected, or it covers it in very fine detail. Well, guess we'll see. It's seems higher visual quality than The Animation at least, and no awkward real-world framing. Ep.7 seems to be the end of some chapter, with Dark Falz apparently disabled for a while. Eps.8 and 9 are Quna&Hadred's story, then we get a new chapter of sorts, which gets way more time-travelly. Ep.12.5 is a clip summary. Ep.16 ends another chapter, another Dark Falz. The last part again ends with a battle where everyone participates. Parts of it don't quite make sense, but it's appropriately dramatic. And of course things aren't entirely over, or the game wouldn't continue. Overall, it's a decent story. Cool that many details were there from the start but only gradually started to make sense. The sexual dimorphism is pretty bad though in PSO2 (as it already was in the PSU continuity), and all the women (except Maria and Lisa I think?) needing saved by male partners at some point is also bleh. I wonder how many details were left out of the anime. The game seems to have a bunch of semi-important side quests. |
| Phantasy Star Online 2: The Animation (TV) | Not really good | Started this because Andrea was playing PSO2 and found the story was missing a lot of details. Maybe this will fill in the missing parts? Male MC isn't great though, and why did they add the real world framing? Seems like a waste of time/effort. As it is it comes across as one big infomercial for PSO2 :/ Which it really is of course. From ep.8 on it gets even weirder, with the game becoming an alternate reality mixing up with the regular reality. I dunno. If they wanted to go deeper into the game they should've just stuck to that from the beginning and not spend 7 eps. on a real-world setting, and if they wanted to advertise the playing of the game as a game they should've just stuck with that setting instead. Now there's only 4 eps. left to get into the new stuff. Well, somehow they actually crammed the buildup to and the final battle into just 3 eps. With a very het romance thrown in as well. Bleh. So yeah, this doesn't really explain much of PSO2's story itself, basically rushes through some of its backstory. And advertises the game of course, all wrapped in a not very useful real-world setting and het romance. |
| Phantom Quest Corp. (OAV) | Decent | Ayaka is very fanservicey. And the OP and ED are super long. Four eps. that are entertaining, but don't have much depth. After the omake prologue you can watch them in any order really. |
| Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~ (TV) | Not really good | Another girls-with-guns anime by Bee-Train :) Hmm. It starts off pretty good, although Ein is quite sexualized, and Zwei gets the typical 'rescue the broken bird' role. Then episode 10 ends in an unexpected way, and ep.11 is really weird (and also in large part a clip show). I wonder if the story can recover from this. Finished. What a depressing story this ended up being. And confusing too. None of the characters are really likeable, the ones that are at least a little likeable end up killed, betrayal happens all the time, oh, and miraculous survival happens also several times. There was too much navel-gazing in the second half of the anime. After looking up the background, I understand why this was so bad. It's based on an eroge. No wonder it felt like a harem story at times. |
| Pita-Ten (TV) | So-so | The character designs look CLAMPish, but aren't. Dai-chan and his sister are super annoying. I hope it gets to be about Misha and Shia more later on. Well, it tries, but never becomes deep. The ending is a little more moving, but it's all quickly resolved to a reset ending. |
| A Place Further Than the Universe (TV) | Very good | Slice-of-life:adventure, is that a thing? It seems to be getting good reviews. Hmm, so the POV character is not the leader. I guess that works. Hey, that was pretty good. Not perfect, but pretty good overall. Mostly I'd like to have had more about the girls' stay in Antarctica. As it is, it's squeezed into the last four eps., with the expedition to the station where Takako disappeared taking up only one half ep. I have to admit they ended up doing a pretty good job with the character development though. At first it seemed like the girls hardly cared about each other and there would be silly gags very often, but Shirase coming to terms with the loss of her mom was handled very well. The girls becoming friends was also written quite believably, but I think it would've been better to show more of their daily lives instead of the very quick montages we got. Anyways, this is one for the to-buy list. |
| planetarian (ONA) | Good | Slice-of-life:sad (it's from Key, so..). Not too long, so might be worth watching. Check out more review after it finishes? Yes, it looks like typical Key sadness. The ONA is only 5 eps., and they're between 13 and 24 min., so it's not a very long story. The setting is a little more grim than usual for Key. The story ended a little different from what I expected at first, but more or less as expected from ep.4 on. I wonder what the movie adds. Even if it repeats everything from the ONA, it's still at least 24min. longer. |
| planetarian: Hoshi no Hito (movie) | Good | Turns out this repeats all of the "Chiisana Hoshi No Yume" ONA, but frames it as a flashback within a story that takes place much later. The ONA is split in two parts (~ eps.1-3 and eps.4&5), so the later "Hoshi No Hito" story frames it in three parts. It's a distant sequel of sorts, so it also works if you've watched the ONA before. It gives a little closure to the protagonist's story after the ONA, and adds a bit of hope to the bleak setting. Tearjerky as always with Key, but it doesn't draw things out too much. |
| Planetes (TV) | Decent | This has good and not so good sides. Good is that there are actual adults (instead of the usual anime cast of kids and teenagers), it pays attention to class differences both on a small and large scale, and it shows a fairly realistic version of space exploration (well, much more realistic than usual at least). Not so good is that one of the main characters (and by the end of the series, the main character) is quite a jerk a lot of the time, and the other main character is pushed way back into the supportive, initiativeless girlfriend role. |
| Plastic Little (OAV) | Weak | The fanservice is very prominent in this anime. There is a lot of action (chases, explosions), but like the plot, it's mostly to look exciting, not to make sense. Add to that that this OVA is also rather short (only 45min.), which makes any depth of the story or character development impossible. The animators should've used their talent and time on something good instead. |
| Please Save My Earth (OAV) | Decent | Interesting characters and unique story, but.. eh? Is this thing incomplete, or what? The first five episodes build a good story, that looks to be going to be at least ten episodes long. Then episode six is almost entirely a flashback to one of the characters' past that, while it explains some of why he has been acting the way he did, doesn't complete the story at all. It's just left hanging. I have no idea why this series wasn't completed, as the story is certainly good enough to warrant a full anime adaptation. As it is, I can't really say it's bad, because it isn't, but just, way incomplete. |
| Poco's Udon World (TV) | Decent | Tagged as iyashikei. The first ep. looks cute, although not very original. This anime is really advertising Kagawa, isn't it? Yup, this anime is one big ad for Kagawa. Souta & Poko's story is almost just a framing story for visiting various Kagawa locations. The last ep. adds some drama that was postponed since ep.1, and then resolves it, well, not quite satisfyingly. I would've liked it better if Poko had stayed around. You can feel it coming by how the question had been avoided the whole anime long, but the last ep. is still kind of a plot-dump. Overall, it's nice, but I can't call it great really. |
| Polar Bear's Café (TV) | Good | Like Bamboo wrote, this isn't a series to marathon. But watching an ep. every now and then is an enjoyable distraction. It's quite enjoyable, but Sasako-san is really very much a Smurfette. And one with very few lines at that. |
| Pom Poko (movie) | Good | Pretty cool (and silly) movie. Very Ghibli/Takahata too, what with all the nostalgia. I might have to replace this DVD though. It isn't bad like the Disney releases, but they did edit the title logo for example. |
| Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (movie) | Very good | A touching, and beautiful movie. As expected from Hayao Miyazaki of course. This one is even more for young kids than Spirited Away was. Watching this again, it's still visually/technically impressive, but the story doesn't really make any sense. I mean, the suddenly the whole world is in danger (and also suddenly not anymore) thing is never explained or really foreshadowed (and the undoing is simply told not shown), and are they really making this into a marriage or something between five-year-olds that's arranged by their parents? |
| Popin Q (movie) | Very good | Finally got to watch this. It's really pretty, and pretty good. Basically a magical girl story crammed into a single movie. That means some parts are passed over very quickly, and everyone but Isumi gets very little background and development. That's especially the case for the mascots. It is an interesting movie though. And then there's the post-credits cliffhanger, which sets up a really elaborate sequel in ~1m20s. I hope someday it'll actually be made. |
| Porco Rosso (movie) | Good | A bit of an odd duck among Miyazaki's earlier movies. It is quite Miyazaki with all the flying of course, but the setting makes it a little less suited for kids. There's plenty of slapstick added into it though, although the fight at the end clashed a little with the earlier seriousness. Fio was really cool. I wish we'd seen more from her perspective instead of just the short ending monologue. More Gina would have been interesting too. |
| (Le) Portrait de Petite Cossette (OAV) | So-so | Music by Yuki Kajiura ♡ Oy, this is very artsy/experimental/surreal. The music is good though, and it's not too long, so it's bearable. Hmm. The story, insofar as it can be called that, isn't very interesting, and fairly predictable. I'll add the soundtrack to my to-buy list though. |

| Precure All Stars DX2: Kibō no Hikari—Rainbow Jewel o Mamore! (movie) | Decent | Heavy on the CGI, especially in the last part. During the ending it even took a dive into the uncanny valley. Tsubomi and Erika were a little off-model, to match the drawing style of the rest. As always it's still cool to see all the Cures kicking ass together. Best moment was near the beginning though, when the first three teams suddenly showed up behind the latest two. Poor Kaoru and Michiru. They never get counted as proper Cures, even though Hikari, Kurumi and Setsuna are. |
| Precure All Stars DX: Minna Tomodachi—Kiseki no Zenin Daishūgō (movie) | Good | It's really cool to see all the Cures kick ass together. It's especially nice to see the Futari Wa and Splash Star teams again. Pity that this movie seems to take PreCure 5 and Fresh's example and push Nagisa and Saki as the leaders of their respective teams, even though their teams were balanced with both Cures equals. The result is that most shots have Nagisa, Saki, Nozomi and Love front and center, with the rest pushed to the sides (or even out of the picture). Bleh :( |
| Precure All Stars New Stage 2: Kokoro no Tomodachi (movie) | Good | Bleh. I wish they'd put Tarte on a bus already. He seems to be the directors' favorite, but he sure isn't mine. Hummy's so much nicer. As could be expected from an All Stars movie by now, many characters don't even get to speak. I think the All Stars concept is getting a little worn out, but there are at least two more movies.. The plot was very thin, as usual, and there wasn't even much of a post-fight ending, at least for the Cures (Gureru got a lot of time though). I still cried a few times though ;‿; |
| Precure All Stars New Stage: Mirai no Tomodachi (movie) | Good | Oh, cold opening. That's a new one for the movies. All the Cures working together is still so ;_; awesome. I thought Ayumi was going to be Echo for longer though. She didn't transform until the finale and then detransformed right after. That's kinda disappointing. I was also expecting more story. Of course, it's still an All Stars movie, so I could've expected all the transformations and attacks, but somehow I thought there'd be only a few and the rest of the time would be story. As it is, Ayumi and Fuu's friendship felt a little weak, and Ayumi's mom came across unreasonably stern. Fridge logic: Why was the Smile group in Yokohama searching for Fusion parts if they weren't there during the opening? And how come they didn't know there were more Cures if the whole thing was on TV and in the newspaper? |
| Precure All-Stars DX3 Mirai ni Todoke! Sekai o Tsunagu Niji-Iro no Hana (movie) | Decent | Hmm, is Kanade in team Blue? Ah, we have three teams in this movie. Pink, Blue/Green/White, and Yellow/Orange/Red/Purple. But of course, team Pink gets the most prominence. Halfway, team Blue are even getting courage from how their respective team Pink friends would lead them. Bleh, I hate how it's always team Pink, team Pink, team Pink. I wish they'd make a series with a blue or yellow or green or purple leader, just so the stupid color coding would fail. Better would be of course to go back to teams of equals like Futari Wa and Splash Star. As always, Kaoru and Michiru are left out, as well as Tsubomi's grandma/Cure Flower. It's kinda strange for them to stand watching and doing nothing when the Cures are in trouble. I must say, this movie had a lot of crying in it. I suppose it's better than the previous DX one having the fairies so prominent. Otherwise this movie is pretty much the kitschy cliché we've come to expect from All Stars movies. And those are just extremes of the movies in general. Ah well, it is what it is. It's still cool to see all the Cures together the first time. The formula is getting a bit stale though. Pretty soon they'll run out of time to even show all the Cures' transformations and attacks. I hear the New Stage movie will shake things up a bit, so looking forward to that. |
| Precure Miracle Universe (movie) | Decent | The usual PreCure movie. Not much of a backstory at all, a slightly different plot, though not by much. All the expected story beats. I guess having previous seasons' Cures (not just the last 3 that is) appear is a thing now? |
| Precure Super Stars! (movie) | Decent | I've only watched the Chinese hard-sub edition yet, but my impression was that this was one of the weakest PreCure movies ever. Movie-only character has no backstory, and disappears happily before the final battle. Most of the movie has only the three Pinks, while the rest of their teams sit in a no-background space and just chat. Miracle Lights used to be only for tough battles, but here they're used for deus-ex-machina plot twists that weren't necessary to begin with. The whole movie feels like just a flimsy excuse to have the Cures interact a bit. Watched it with English subs now, but that didn't change my opinion. Very weak, even for a PreCure movie (which aren't exactly known for their deep plots). |
| Pretty Cure (TV) | Very good | With wacky titles like 'Futari wa Precure Splash Star', 'Futari wa Precure Max Heart 2' and 'Yes! Precure 5 GoGo!', I simply had to know what this is about. Oy. If someone were to make a parody of the magical girl genre, it'd probably look a lot like this. All the tropes of the genre are there (vague quest, transformations, cute mascots, gratuitous English, etc.) in excess, and it all looks made for merchandising too. Watching this reminded me of those cartoons we used to watch on Saturday mornings on some English TV channel while our parents slept in. Care Bears, Inspector Gadget, Popples, Transformers, etc. It was fun :) If TV is chewing gum for the eyes, anime like this are sweet, fruity flavored, and good for blowing colorful bubbles. One thing that disappointed me about this anime though is the pure good vs. pure evil theme. The good folks never do anything wrong and must lead rather boring lives, the bad folks have some redeeming qualities and experiences, but get defeated all the same, just for threatening the good folks. Okay, it's an anime aimed at kids, so deep reflection and struggle might be over their heads, but I'd still have liked more nuance. Despite good opportunity (two best friend heroines), there's no shoujo-ai at all. I can see why they're so popular for slash fiction though. |
| Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal (ONA 2014) | Good | This version of the anime is said to stick closer to the original manga, but also to be pretty bad in regard to visuals and subs. Well, for ep.1 the subs weren't great, but not super awful yet. The visuals are rather different from the '90s anime, but not super bad. I guess you could call them bad if you were expecting big budget quality. The style takes some getting used to, but that's okay with me. It's still very het. Usagi is pretty clearly bi though, even if it's Mamoru she's in love with. Ah, Venus shows up at the end of ep.7. Hmm, I recall Venus being a decoy for Moon at some point in the original anime, but not her deceiving the senshi themselves before they regained their memories. Either I misremember or they changed that in the old series I guess. Hmm, it only lasted for one ep. before everyone remembered who they were. Huh? This season is supposed to end at 13 eps., yet the final battle isn't over yet. What a weird cliffhanger. |
