| D4DJ First Mix (TV) | Good | Let's find out what it is a DJ does in a band. Ended up watching this weekly. By ep.4 the HapiAra seems to be together, but it's still not quite clear what a DJ does in a band. Mixing two songs together can be done on-stage, but that isn't really necessary. Mixing a single song is done off-stage. Visuals are made off-stage and cued to the songs played, so the VJ doesn't need to be on stage either really. Creating new songs also happens off-stage. So far it really seems like DJ units are a small variation on idol units. The off-stage work is serious of course, but the DJ doesn't really need to be on stage. All this doesn't address what a DJ does in a band though. But it's entertaining at least, and the songs are decent. What is weird though is seeing BanDori seiyuu in D4DJ Lives. Their characters/behavior don't match at all between the two series. I'll stick with just BanDori Lives and only watch the D4DJ anime. Finished. The last ep. went all out on the performances, though still only the three highschool units (HapiAra, PikiPiki, Photome). Too bad the other units don't get to appear. The 3D animation (other than background/crowd characters) is really good. I guess I expected this anime to be about DJing. Instead, it's about DJ units, i.e. idol units which include a DJ. Just like an anime about bands wouldn't go into detail about playing different instruments, this only describes the DJ stuff rather superficially. Which isn't what I'd hoped for. Overall, it's a nice slice-of-life anime, which serves mostly as an introduction to the D4DJ franchise. |

| Death Billiards (movie) | Weak | Unexplained setup and a pointless game, and all just so the male characters can be dramatic about life and death and violence. Bleh. Not recommended. |
| Deathtic 4 (movie) | Decent | Part of Genius Party. This one has a more experimental style, sort of a mix between sketching and 3DCG. It feels more Western than Japanese really, both in art and setting. |
| Delicious Party♡Precure (TV) | Very good | Wow, forgot to update this since back when TropicaRouge was still running. Oops ^_^; Don't like how Takumi/BlaPe often does the Tuxedo Kamen thing making the Cures look incompetent. Mary so far hasn't fallen into the bury your gays pitfall, which is good. The Cures are all pretty nice this season. I like Ran/YumYum's silly speech style ^_^ There was that 6-week hiatus between eps.5 and 6 (Toei got hacked or something), which cut Amane's growth from Gentle to Cure Finale quite short. It's not as bad as Healin'Good's several-month hiatus, but it probably doesn't help PreCure's slowly diminishing popularity over the years. Hmm, Fennel's face-heel reveal was kinda predictable from several eps. back. And unfortunately we get not one but three Tuxedo Kamens as well :( The ending was a bit weirdly paced. First there's nearly two eps. of final battle, then you'd expect the last ep. to be a little bit of conclusion and a crossover to the next season. Instead it's all conclusion. In itself not bad, but there's not really enough to fill a whole ep., so it feels kinda empty. The final battle and the lead-up to it had not one but two forced de-transformations. The latter one also got the BlaPe/Mary group, so at least we didn't get a repeat of the Tuxedo Kamens protecting the Cures. Overall it was a pretty decent season, except for the Tuxedo Kamen group. Looking forward to the next season. |
| Deliver Police: Nishitokyo-shi Deliver Keisatsutai (movie) | Decent | Anime No Tane 2021 This has English audio, but given the Japanese subs and ending credits, it seems maybe that was intended. The subs seem to have more nuance in personality and tone though. The story isn't very original, but the animation is decent. |
| Demashitaa! Powerpuff Girls Z (TV) | Good | At first I thought it was just a louder version of the American original, but there are actually quite a lot of changes. Maybe it's not the best magical girls anime out there, but it's certainly pretty good. |
| (The) Demon Girl Next Door (TV) | Decent | aka Machikado Mazoku. It looks interesting. Yeah, this looks like an anime that'd be hard to sub, with all the rapid talking and background text. And finished. That went by pretty quickly. There's a lot of (often unnecessary) weirdness, but it's also kinda cute. Would've been nice if Momo had become Shamiko's vassal after all, but I guess this fits the rest of the story. All in all, it's nice, but not as great as I was expecting. |
| Demonbane (OAV) | Decent | Apparently this isn't an extra episode for the TV series, but an earlier stand-alone OVA. Plenty of similarities between the two, but also some differences. This OVA gets bonus points for having a cool visual style with lots of unusual perspective shots. It's much lighter on Lovecraft references than the TV series though. Minus point for the fansub not translating Lloigor and Zhar correctly. |
| Demonbane (TV) | Not really good | Came across this while looking through some Lovecraftian mythos articles. Apparently it's somewhat related, although in a weird way. Well, that's right. Lots of names dropped, so it's fun to see how many are Lovecraftian mythos related. The main characters actually are like a magical girl and her fairy, except a dude and a mystic book incarnated as a girl. I don't expect much except weirdness from this. Well, that was at least somewhat entertaining. There are tons of smaller and bigger references to the mythos, some that I didn't catch even. The story itself doesn't have anything to do with it, nor do the mecha of course. |
| Den-noh Coil (TV) | Very good | Charming and cool. It's nice to see kids being kids for a change, even with some more serious subjects thrown in. There is rather a lot of exposition going on at all times. I suppose it can't be helped given the setting, and it's mixed into the story nicely, but still, it's a lot of exposition. The art style is very distinctive, but the colors could have been a little more lively instead of 'next-gen' shades of grey and beige. Those are minor complaints though. This anime is definitely worth watching. |
| Destiny of the Shrine Maiden (TV) | Decent | Reported to have real lesbian romance, so I'm very eager to see this. At the same time it's the last anime like that on my to-watch list, so I want to savor it for a while. This anime is very high pace. Characters are introduced with just a few lines each, the plot starts with several mysterious events and mecha. It feels as if they took a 26 ep. series and cut out half of it. Not that the story would make much more sense then, but at least we'd be able to understand what is going on. The story had some interesting bits in it, Chikane's half-unrequited love for Himeko in particular. The part about her going mad and the 'we can't be together but I'll always remember you' part were classic 'lesbians are bad' clichés though, barely negated by the very last scene. Overall, the whole thing is rushed way too much, and all the mecha fights and Oogami just get in the way of the story. Considering the lack of lesbian stories in anime this isn't exactly bad, but not as good as I was led to expect, and not as good as it could have been. |

It seems that the story won't be a happy one for Jun :( Aw, just when Jun and Kazumi got back together, she gets a really dead montage and is fridged.. I guess it was too much to hope for :( Overall, this anime is okay. At times it gets good, sometimes it's just confusing or too long-winded. It's never upbeat though. |
| Di Gi Charat (TV) | Bad | Wow, this must be quite old and cheaply made. The OP mentions a 'Y2K problem', and the only somewhat detailed art is the main characters. The jokes so far aren't very funny either. Well, it's short, so I'll finish it. Can I have those 48min. of my life back please? This was utterly random, and not in a funny way either. |
| Diamond Daydreams (TV) | Good | I wonder how this got on the to-watch list. It looks romance-heavy, and not so nice on the protagonists. The preview for ep.2 has me a little scared. Oh, false alarm. Hmm, maybe this'll turn out okay. Bleh, it's rather heavy on the male gaze despite the female MCs. Well, in the end it turned out quite okay. It was indeed romance-heavy, but in a sort of melancholy, open-ended way. Meaning that we just get a period of the MC's life, without a HEA conclusion, just a content-for-now one. Which is refreshing too I guess. |
| (The) Diary of Tortov Roddle (ONA) | Decent | Six short episodes, one longer one, and two short extras also by Kunio Katou. Interesting to see, but nothing deep. It reminds me of some children's books. |
| Didn't I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life?! (TV) | Very good | Isekai, but about an all-girls group this time. Ah, so "average" as in "mathematical average with outlier not excluded and therefore actually severely skewed". Well, it's a gag I guess. Lots of isekai tropes jokes too. Could've done without the boob jokes and creepy villain, but otherwise an okayish first ep. Ooh, that was quite entertaining actually. Okay, the poking fun at otaku isekai reincarnation stuff keeps coming up now and then, and the boob size jokes never lay off, but the story and characters are nice. There's a really big sequel hook at the end though. I hope there'll be a second season, but the LNs are ongoing I think, so it'll probably be a long time before there's enough story for that. |

| Dirty Pair Flash (OAV) | Decent | This is pretty old. The remake's from 1994, the first OVAs from the 1980s, no idea about the original LNs. It looks fun though, with a '90s esthetic. Kei uses 'ore', that's a real rarity. There's so much exposition speak it becomes very noticeable. Hmm, Iris was a former Lovely Angel? I thought this was a remake of the original? Maybe Yuri&Kei replacing Molly&Iris was the original story. Part 2 isn't as great. It's set in a simulated 20th century Tokyo :/ I liked it better when it was all space and sci-fi. At least the last ep. of this part was better. I guess part 3 is going to be a bunch of short stories. They're fun, but a little uneven in animation quality. Oh, ep. 3 is all fanservice all the time. There's hardly a second without fanservice, and that's saying something in this anime. And then the last ep. goes out with some fireworks again. Well, overall I think it wasn't as good as I expected. Not really bad, but it had some boring parts, some too fanservicey parts, some good parts, and some cheaply-animated ones. |

| Dirty Pair: Project Eden (movie) | Not really good | Got praised by both Carin McLeoud and Mike Toole, so maybe I should watch it some time. Wow, so '80s. There's a lot of fanservice (some ecchi even), but I suppose that's to be expected of a Dirty Pair movie. Everything is made of explodium too. There's a lot of insert/bg songs, all very '80s too of course. Oh, and the despite taking place in a distant future and galaxy, the two factions in this case just happen to resemble '80s capitalism vs. totalitarian communism. Yep, very '80s indeed. This Carson guy is seriously annoying, lecturing the girls about their job. And of course one of them (Kei) gets all mushy about him despite that. The plot is kinda standard mad scientist. The most interesting things about this movie were the music (not super, but nicely '80s) and the filler text. |
| (The) Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (movie) | Very good | A very long movie that actually adds some new things to the existing Suzumiya Haruhi story. Most of it is in an alternate timeline though. As expected of a movie, the art quality is a little better than the second season. The focus of the story is on Kyon unfortunately, but Yuki plays a major role too. Toward the end it got a little confusing with Kyon arguing with himself (accompanied by flashback/forward/whatevers), but I suppose that's to be expected with time travel and Kyon. Good thing Itsuki didn't play a big role or things would've been even worse. Overall, better than the new parts of season two, and certainly worth watching. Second time watching this. Yah, there's too much Kyon in this movie, and too little Haruhi/Yuki/Mikuru. The resolution is also a bit anticlimactic; much like "Endless Eight", it just returns to normal; no frantic scramble to set things right, no action scenes, just wake up and everything's back as usual. Pity they never animated the later novels; I've heard there's more interesting stuff in there. |
| Dojin Work (TV) | Good | Animation Runner Kuromi was interesting (and fun). Maybe this will give some insight into the world of manga? The episodes are short, but it is quite funny actually. There is surprisingly little fanservice too, considering the doujinshi's subject matter. I didn't learn much about manga in general, but it was interesting anyway. Second time watching. Why did I buy this again? There's very little fanservice, but especially in the early eps. there's a lot of innuendo. It's maybe funny once, but it's repeated too often. The later eps. mostly do away with it, but aren't really better. This anime doesn't go into any detail regarding the making of manga, it's only about the overall doujin process, and even that's not given much detail really, what with both Najimi and Nidou not selling anything really. |
| Doki Doki School Hours (TV) | So-so | Oh, a very 4-koma format. Should make for easy marathoning, but I wonder how they'll keep things interesting with so many gags per ep. Cool, there are two gay characters in this anime (one boy, one girl). They're a bit stereotyped/weird, but it's still nice to see. (yes, I know everyone is weird in this comedy anime, but it's so rare to see gay characters that even one weird one already skews the average) All the characters are rather one-dimensional though, and most gags are just repeats with slight differences of the introductions in the first ep. From ep.14 on they try to freshen things up a bit by changing the genre, like Excel Saga and Pani Poni Dash, but that only works so-so. |

Oh well, it's only 4 eps. long (plus 6 for the sequel). The ending seems a little incomplete, but a deep story was never really the focus I suppose. |

| Dragon Age: Dawn of the Seeker (movie) | So-so | Nice to see a female protagonist. Only 39min. in before she has to be rescued by her male companion though :/ I fear more chickification. What's up with characters in this movie scowling all the time btw? Looks like a recipe for anasty tension headache to me. The characters are so predictable. The dying mentor, the love interest, the gloating badguy, .. Well, in the end it wasn't too bad. Very predictable at times, and the romance was *rolleyes*, but still nice to see a female MC. The 3D is rather low-quality though. Some doujin short movies look better than this. |

| (The) Eccentric Family (TV) | Good | Recommended for MMecharin by Leah. S2 will start April 2017. The ANN review makes it come across as rather heavy. I hope that's just that reviewer. Hmm, the first ep. is kinda hard to make sense of yet, but it does feel a bit like it could have a "psychological" or "drama" tag. Seven eps. in there's still no real plot. It's only Yasaburou slowly finding out more details around his father's death. Oh, in ep.10 we finally get some actual tension. And from there on it stays fairly exciting. The ending isn't as spectacular as expected, but I guess that fits the rest of the series. All in all it's just one story from the tanukis' lives, and we don't really get to see much of their normal lives. Well, maybe a bit. It's no definite ending though, as Benten and the other Friday Club members are still around. Maybe S2 will go into more detail about that? What bothers me a bit about this anime is how it's all about Yasaburou and his brothers and other guys he hangs out with. The female characters (few as they are too) hardly get any attention. Benten appears quite a bit but remains a mystery; mom (forgot her name) appears now and then but hardly does more than reassure the brothers or be a plot device with her fear of thunderstorms; and Kaisei hardly even appears. The other characters are all male. Overall, not a bad anime, but not without flaws either. |
| (The) Eccentric Family 2 (TV) | Decent | Same characters, new story. Well, not completely the same chars. Two new ones appear, maybe three, and some old ones are gone. It looks like there'll be some visual fireworks this season too, and maybe some more development of Benten. Just like in S1, they saved the fireworks/plot tension for the end. The difference is that there's not much coherent buildup before that. It's all messy and unrelated. The female characters get a little more screentime, but they don't really get to play much of a role in the plot. Benten unfortunately remains a complete mystery here as well. Her enemy Nidaime (I still think it just means Junior, but it's used as a name apparently) is equally vague, and there's no real resolution to their fight either. So, while it shows more of the characters, otherwise it's mostly a mess. It has its interesting moments, but they're quite incoherent. |
| Eden of the East (TV) | Very good | Wow, that has to be one of the strangest opening scenes. The art is pretty though. I wonder where this'll go. Hmm. Up until a few episodes from the end, I thought they'd never finish the story in the remaining eps. They managed with some big infodumps in the last two though. Even so, things aren't quite finished completely, so the two movies are already announced at the end. Apart from the infodumping being a little too much at once (it would have been better writing to take more time to tell all that), the story is really intriguing and never boring. It's refreshing to see adults acting like adults again. The two main characters are very likeable, even if Saki is a little in Akira's shadow. Definitely one of the top anime of late. |
| Eden of the East: Paradise Lost (movie) | Good | The end of the story was sort of a reset. I was expecting more of a bang from the whole 'saving the country' thing. Overall, EotE certainly isn't a bad anime. The art is good, and the animation too. The characters are likeable, and there is enough intriguing going on to keep watching. The plot kinda lost its direction though, even if the aimless running around was entertaining. |

| Eiga Dokidoki! Precure Mana Kekkon!!? Mirai ni Tsunagu Kibō no Dress (movie) | Decent | It seems the title of the movie only refers to the short prologue, and a tiny bit near the end. Although it does take place in the regular setting, this movie has even less of a plot than usual for PreCure movies. Like the early part of the series, everything revolves around Mana, with the rest of the Cures playing hardly more than third banana. Aguri/Ace in particular gets the shortest end of the stick, not showing up until two-thirds into the movie, just suddenly appearing together with Ai without playing any part in the plot before that. And shortly after assisting Sword she detransforms again too. Is this the first time we got to see blood in PreCure? Aside from accidental finger pricks or scraped knees I don't think we've seen actual wounds before. Here Mana gets bitten in the shoulder and very clearly is bleeding. The perennial Miracle Lights too are introduced even more perfunctory than usual. Aside from some too noticeable 3D CG, the animation is certainly up to snuff, so it's not like they didn't care or something, it's just the writing. |
| Eiga HappinessCharge PreCure! Ningyō no Kuni no Ballerina (movie) | Good | Another side story movie, in which Lovely gets.. something other than Innocent form? Looks like just the usual preview of the end-of-season powerup. I liked how PreCure's usual love and willpower can overcome anything failed at letting Tsumugi walk again, but the villain being the cause of her legs failing was a bit of a cop-out. I would've liked to see how they handled the dilemma of removing Tsumugi from her happy place. |
| Eiga Healin' Good ♥ Precure Yume no Machi de Kyun! tto GoGo! (movie) | Decent | How is this VR thing supposed to work without the users looking like idiots to non-users or users walking into danger all the time? Would've made more sense if they'd just used something like magic or space travel or whatever. Oh, totally forgot this movie's a crossover with Yes5GoGo. That's why annoying old Bunbee cameo'd earlier. Let's hope he doesn't appear more than that. Huh? All 6 of the team show up and announce themselves, then the group pose is just the original 5 without Milky Rose? Weird. Ah, right. Gotta show that Milky is Milk of course. Well, with a name like Kaguya it's to be expected she's going to disappear of course. Are the Yes5 girls really just there to assist and be knocked down? Ah, Dream got to do the Pinks thing together with Grace at the end. I guess altogether it's just another PreCure movie. Not great, but fun and colorful and actionful too. This time with a 3min. ToroPuri short at the end. Which is just a little silliness before the joint dance ending (joint between Healing and ToroPuri that is, Yes5 didn't appear again). |
| Eiga Mahō Tsukai Precure! Kiseki no Henshin! Cure Mofurun! (movie) | Excellent | The Magical Lesson short is basically Toei cashing in on Disney's 3D success. Miracle looks like a ripoff of those princesses, and there's random bees. The main movie is really good. Not only is Cure Mofurun super adorbs, visually it is also great, from the pretty scenery to the funny reaction faces to the cool battles. I think this is my new favorite PreCure movie, above the Max Heart 2 one. |
| Eiga Precure All Stars New Stage 3: Eien no Tomodachi (movie) | Good | Confusing that HapCha Cure #3 (Yuu-yuu) sometimes appears in All Stars movie previews in HapCha, and again in one opening image in the movie proper, but is apparently not in the movie. Which makes sense, as she hasn't joined the team yet by ep.6, but why show her then? :? Ooh? Introduction by All Stars movie? That's a new one I think. Oh, and Echo showed up too, but only for a short cameo. She wasn't even in the ED. |
| Eiga Precure All Stars: Haru no Carnival (movie) | Decent | Hmm, there's a lot of stills and stock footage here. And as I've heard, the villains aren't very convincingly villainous. Maybe the All Stars concept has run its course. At least there's no miracle lights this time. Well, it got a little better later on. The last third had a lot of action. It wasn't a very coherent plot, but it was moderately entertaining. |
| Eiga Precure All Stars: Minna de Utau Kiseki no Mahō! (movie) | Decent | A musical this time. Gotta do something different to keep the All Stars formula working. It looks a little silly to have anyone burst into song at random times, but that's musicals. Yay for Cure Echo being back. And she gets more lines than ever before. And that's that. The last of the All Stars movies, if it's going to be Dream Stars from now on. This one was, okayish. About the same as Haru No Carnival. |
| Eiga Precure Dream Stars! (movie) | Decent | This movie's much like a typical All Stars one, except with the unwieldy number of Cures reduced some. There are still 12 (4+3+5), which is one more than the very first Go Go Dream Live! had (3+2+6). The major differences are the smaller scale of the setting (the Sakuragahara shrine and surrounding area) and of course being nearly all 3D. The characters are at least 3D all the time, the backgrounds sometimes aren't. The former aspect doesn't hurt the movie, only helps a little to speed up the backstory and world-building. The latter aspect gets in the way in the usual way 3D does; the director is too concerned with showing off (or maybe justifying/proving) the 3D stuff, and trying too hard to mask how 3D everything is results in a lot of exaggerated blurring and lack of detail. Motion blur, out-of-focus blur, chromatic aberration, and too thick outlines all add up to making the art, which should be the highlight in an all-3D movie, just rather meh. I had a hard time getting good screenshots too because framing either isn't this director's strong point, or again hard to get right in 3D (being more realistic where 2D could get away with fudging positions, relations and shapes of objects). If all the cases of showing off were removed, the movie would be quite a bit shorter, but have a more coherent story (which would then stand out as not being very deep though). Of the movie's characters, Sakura is cute but not very deep, Shizuku/Samidare is cool but doesn't really get any depth, the dogs are just filler, and the main villain, Karasu Tengu, is really cute and wasted on a short story like this. A shallow attempt is made to spice up the dogs with a comedy duo as seiyuu, but that gets undermined by them getting very little screentime. | Eiga Precure Miracle Leap: Minna to Fushigi na 1-nichi (movie) | Good | Decided to put this down as an All Stars movie after all. It's basically the same formula as all the recent ones, putting the Cures of the last 3 seasons together, while mostly focusing on the last season. Notably Asumi/Cure Earth does not appear in this movie at all. Technically it came out afer ep.30, but it was originally planned to come out after the usual ep.6 (Asumi first appeared in ep.19). A decent enough movie. Basically a time loop plot. Mirakurun despite nominally being the movie's central character was kind of a macguffin in the end. Didn't play any role really, just served as motivation for the villain and heroines. The villain was also just there to fight and make the plot happen, didn't have much motivation really. Well, I guess we can't expect much from a 1h10m movie for little kids that has to include Mirakurun Lights. As it is, it was decent enough. Pretty backgrounds everywhere, although you can play spot the repeated patterns with the trees and shrubs. |
| Eiga Smile Precure: Ehon no Naka wa Minna Chiguhagu! (movie) | Decent | After HeartCatch and Suite's series-related settings, this movie goes with the separate world setting again. The pink Cure as the main character is also back, with the last half of the movie focused on Miyuki and Niko, and Happy being the only one to get an ultra transformation :/ Overall, I liked the fairytales and Niko, but the ending felt a little tame. |
| Eiga Suite Precure: Torimodose! Kokoro ga Tsunagu Kiseki no Melody (movie) | Good | Oh? That's the first time the movie starts off right after the preceding ep. in the same town. Even the HeartCatch movie changed the location. Like with the series, I feel that this season's battles are a little tame. The Cures appear pretty weak compared to other seasons', but the battles are over quickly after long attacks. Which makes the villains and monsters also look weak. Okay, the movies' stories and villains are always a little predictable and more dramatic than serious, but this one didn't feel as much of a threat as other movies'. Muse and Hummy didn't see a lot of action in this movie either. In the end only Melody got her ultimate transformation, without much drama. So, all in all this was fun, and interestingly close to the series' story, but a little tame. |
| Eiga Tropical-Rouge! Precure: Yuki no Princess to Kiseki no Yubiwa! (movie) | Very good | Huh, Tropica-Rouge PreCure, in the snow. That's certainly an unexpected combi. Well, not if you'd looked at the movie's title of course. Nice to see the HeartCatch Cures again. They don't get a lot of depth of course, but that's normal for a PreCure movie. The melancholy ending is kinda unusual though. But maybe it fits in with Tropica-Rouge overall having some melancholy themes. |
| "Eiyū" Kaitai (OAV) | Good | BOX-AiR 2016 entry. Ah, this was a fun entry. Could've done without the fanservice and creepy fanboy, but it was nice to see female heroes. And it's an interesting concept, ex-heroes. I wish they'd shown more of the other women's backgrounds and current lives. |
