| Gabriel DropOut (TV) | So-so | Seemed like it mght be interesting? Hmm, the first ep. is mildly okayish. Basically it's two angels acting demon-like and two demons acting angel-like. Nothing exciting so far, but I'll see where it goes. Well, it kinda stays unexciting. This is one of those 4-koma anime that doesn't dare go outside the established character types. Several times things/people happen that might lead to interesting developments, and each time they disappear quickly. As it is, the basic premise isn't really enough to fill the whole anime, so it becomes repeated variations on the same things. |
| Gakuen Alice (TV) | Very good | A curious mixture of an unusual take on the magical girl genre with slapstick comedy. Aww, Mikan and Hotaru are so cute together ^_^ And Luka-pyon and Natsume too. Yay for gay couples! This anime doesn't have much of a plot though. A darker side of the Academy is hinted at often, but in the end nothing is revealed really. |
| Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight! (TV) | Not really good | Yet another anime that was on my to-watch list without any comment. Who keeps adding these? Please add comments next time. This has lolicon and moe tags, and right from the first ep. it feels like I'm not the audience it's aimed at. The same somewhat icky feeling I got from Strawberry Marshmallow. I hope the characters get more personality than they have now, because moe blob and moe MPDG seem appropriate descriptions of them so far. Finished. It gets a little better toward the end, but the first ¾ or so are pretty boring. The ending is sort of happy / sort of melancholy, so overall I can't say it's good. |

| Gala (movie) | Good | Part of Genius Party Beyond. Oh, this one was pretty and had cute characters. |
| Galaxy Angel (TV) | So-so | Hmm, I'll start with just one season before downloading everything. This looks kinda random. It's not outright bad, but it's all comedy, and very simple comedy at that. At 12 min. per ep. it moves pretty quickly though, so I guess I can stand watching the first season. Yep, there's no ongoing plot at all. Aside from the three eps. in which the characters are introduced, you can watch them in any order. |
| Gall Force - Eternal Story (movie) | Weak | Not sure about this, but all-female crew. First of a long series of movies/OVAs. First part (0-8min.) is a space battle that gets the gang together leaving the rest of the fleet. Second parrt (8-28min.) is a smaller space battle. Third part (28-39min.) is a classic Alien plot. Elza dies. In the fourth part (39-47min.) there's another classic, the suspected traitor, plus the ship gets blown up so they have only the escape thingy left. Pony and Catty die. At 47-51min. we get a short fantasy dream sequence that looks rather irrelevant to the plot. After that there's more infodumping (part of which is a cold war plot) as suddenly the all-female Solnoids fall for the first man they've ever seen. Urgh. All the fanservice was already getting annoying, but now we get this sort of male fantasy plot? And predictably it ends with a hinted Eve&Adam setup. Well, at least that means the next OVA or movie will have to start from scratch. Hopefully it's better than this or I'll have to drop this series. |
| Gall Force 2 - Destruction (OAV) | Not really good | Crappy old video format is crappy. Well, at least this doesn't have the plot swerves of the first movie, but it's even worse at having characters with any personality. Seems this series is more about the large-scale plot than the characters. The action looks cool, though of course 1987 animation can't really compare to today's standards. There's slightly less fanservice, but still a lot of pointless near-nudity. |
| Gall Force 3 - Stardust War (OAV) | Not really good | At least we get some infodumping at the start now. Wait, this movie is one big infodump basically. It switches between space war and infodumping, and there's very little else. Can't call the result a plot really. The battle is known to result in both sides' destruction from the start, and the infodumping is just a bit of history that looks dramatic but isn't really. |
| Gall Force: Earth Chapter (OAV) | Not really good | Huh, so it's actually still not back in space. Ep.1 is again a rather futile struggle. It even negates its beginning dilemma. Ep.2 has more space stuff. And again the plot is people planning to do something, then fighting to not do it after all. Meanwhile the purported antagonists apparently sit back and do nothing. Makes you wonder when they get around to actually doing something about that. Oops, there's an ep.3. I thought it was over already. Ep.3 finally has some resolution, but it's kinda weird still. For all the talk about living in peace, they still ended up offing the robots. Who had been strangely patient for supposed omni-destructive agents. Well, whatever. |
| Gall Force: New Era (OAV) | Not really good | Yet another timeskip, yet another set of protagonists. Return of the big bad though, sort of, as well as Catty. Ep.1 seemed to be just the introduction, so it'll have to be a short story to finish in just two eps. Ep.2 is so far mostly explaining what was already obvious, without any action. Oh, and now it's another Alien plot. And finally it ends with a link back to the start of the series. So that's what this installment was about. Well, that was a rather longwinded way to do it then. |

| Garakowa -Restore the World- (movie) | Decent | Shortish movie; slice-of-life in a sci-fi setting? Hmm, this was kinda weird. It looks pretty certainly, but all of the worlds and timelines mixed up make it really hard to follow who's doing what why. Feels like even if you wrote it all out it'd still be too complicated. So I can't really say it's good. |
| (The) Garden of Sinners (movie series) | Very good | It starts off a little confusing, but that clears up later in the episode, and intriguing. So far (ep.1), I'd say, supernatural mysteries? Let's watch more. Ep.2 gives more background on Shiki, although I'm still not sure what happened to Shiki afterwards. More gruesome killing in ep.3, with a touch of supernaturalness for good measure. Little detail of Shiki's past is added, but the present is clarified a little. This series is really intriguing. Ep.4 was all about what happened to Shiki a little while after ep.2. The details of the immediate aftermath are still left open though. And then ep.5 had a rather different style, very confusing. I mean, even for this series it was hard to follow. More background on Touko though, as well as a short appearance by what seems to be Mikiya's sister. I'm not sure I liked this episode's style much. Ep.6 was almost like a side story, about Azaka, which was a little strange, considering the main story has so much left to tell. It wasn't bad though, although I think I'll have to rewatch it to catch all the details of the case. Finally, ep.7 filled in the bits of the mystery from ep.2 and 4, and finished the tale nicely. Again, a rewatch of the series is probably necessary to get all the facts in order. I felt that Shiki's character mellowed some over the course of the series (as opposed to chronologically), and especially at the end. Ah well. All in all, I think I want to own this series on BD :) |
| Gatchaman Crowds (TV) | Good | Hmm, this looks interestingly modern. Reminds me a little of Summer Wars and Penguindrum. That Galax thing is actually a lot like Summer Wars. Hmm, the first half of ep.11 is suddenly a filler clips-with-voice-over part. Someone messed up the broadcast schedule? I wonder if it was fixed for the BD release. And then the ending is all weird. Ep.12 ends things in a kinda unexpected way, then ep.13 partly repeats that, and adds some more unexpected/unexplained details. I don't get it. It started pretty good and cool and interesting, but toward the end it stopped making sense. I want to read some reviews to see if others did get what's going on. I think one of the problems with this anime is that the characters get hardly any background and only the barest personality. Its appeal is only in the plot and action. If the plot goes wonky, only the action is left. Which is pretty good, but maybe not enough to carry the whole thing on its own. |
| Gatchaman Crowds insight (TV) | Decent | New Gatcha getup for Ruirui, new ally, new alien, new enemy. Otherwise more of the same? Let's see how this season fares. The middle sags a bit with all the politics stuff. With Gelsadra it's sort of cute, but it's no Gatcha action. Near the end we get some cool action again, but then it ends with an ep.-long explanation of what happened. Which is at least half unnecessary because we just saw most of what happened. In the end this season has the same problem the first had; the character and world designs are pretty cool, the action kicks ass, the basic ideas/message are okayish, and the writing fails in several ways. Important twists are not properly foreshadowed, things are told, not shown, ideas/messages are presented too naïvely, and characters act only to serve the plot, not according to their own motivations. Oh, and in the last ep. we also get a quick dose of Hajime being too perfect to be believable. |
| Gauche the Cellist (movie) | Decent | Well, if I'm going to watch Kenji Miyazawa-based anime, this one also fits. A very musical movie. The animation is a bit rough sometimes, but the backgrounds are nice. Combining music and animation like this feels very classical. Well, it is an older movie of course. The story isn't anything deep, but I guess it's a little Miyazawa. |
| gdgd Fairies (TV) | So-so | The movie hasn't been subbed yet it seems. Random 4-koma-style gags, with Korokoro as tsukkomi. And someone got their first 3D animation kit. Oh well, as long as it's amusing. Hmm, is it me, or are the voice-over segments getting longer and longer? The jokes are kinda hit-or-miss. Sometimes they're funny, but often they're not. And the ugly 3D models don't help. |
| gdgd Fairies (TV 2) | So-so | And here is season 2. S1 wasn't really great, but these eps. are short, so the meh jokes are bearable if a few are funny. And finished. It's pretty hit-or-miss, but it has some funny moments. Some of the parody drawings are well done too. |
| Gekijōban Tantei Opera Milky Holmes: Gyakushū no Milky Holmes (movie) | So-so | And here we're back to the S1/2 version of MH. They lose their Toys again only 6min. in, then spend the rest of the movie without. There's also the usual referencing every character and their quirks. Well, at least Arsene is back. The overall plot would be quite okay for a movie, if it weren't for all the nonsense and gags getting in the way the whole time. Not the worst entry in the franchise maybe, but definitely not among the good ones. |

| Genji Monogatari Sennenki (TV) | Good | A Japanese classic. The art is very pretty. Colorful and soft. I'm not sure where the story is going yet. The court world must've been very oppressing to women of that time though. Hmm. The story continues like that for a while, then ends at Genji's exile at Suma without much of a conclusion. I don't feel like reading the original though. |
| Ghost Hunt (TV) | Excellent | Fun. Nice smooth animation, interesting mix of characters (although most didn't get much development). I liked how the series is divided into separate cases so that you can watch three or four eps. at a time without cliffhangers. Also good was that there wasn't any noticeable fanservice. Mai was cute ^_^ Highly recommended to everyone. |
| Ghost in the Shell (movie) | Good | A good movie. The art is great, and it's nice to see actual adults for a change. Too bad there's only one woman among the main characters. The ending I found a bit disappointing in the way it reduced Kusanagi to little more than a means of procreation. Ghost In The Shell 2.0 - I think this is a definite improvement of the original. The cleaner computer graphics are nice, and the CG helicopters look no more out of place than in many other contemporary anime. At first I thought there were new scenes added, but after checking the original it seems they just looked different. The Puppet Master having a female voice now is much more appropriate, and also lessens the feeling of Kusanagi being used just because she's a woman somewhat. Recommended over the original for newcomers or fans. Watched 2.0 again. Despite all the advertising around the updated version they f*in forgot to update the subtitles. So you hear them refer to the Puppetmaster as 'kanojo', but the subs still say 'he'. Idiots. Apart from that, maybe it's me, but the sci-fi is starting to feel a bit dated. I mean, if you can build artifical brains and network everything, why would you still use a keyboard? The multi-fingers look cool (if impractical), but even a simple USB connector would take up less space and be much faster. The "if a computer can imitate me perfectly, am I still hunam" question may have been interesting/shocking (though wasn't new even in the '90s), but would be more interesting if extended to "if a computer can imitate me perfectly, shouldn't it be considered hunam". |
| Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (movie) | Bad | This was crap. It looked like someone just discovered what cool things they could do with 3D software and wanted to show off. The story was vague as well. |
| Ghost in the Shell: Arise (OAV) | Good | Watching this and GitS: Arise AA as five eps. (i.e. this, plus AA's eps.9 and 10 as one). That recent ANN article said Arise felt "not quite like GitS", and two commenters also said it was forgettable. Well, we'll see. The first ep. was cool at least. The other three (of Arise) are also okay. Ep.4 especially includes some obvious GitS fan service, like the "diving from a building with optic camo" scene, etc. It tried a little too hard to be "look, it's GitS, see?". Overall I felt the false memories thing was a step too far in trying to surpass the earlier installments' danger. It was a little too magical "can do anything". The joke with Batou punching himself was likewise overused. Before, it was proof how skilled Kusanagi was, now it's just routine comedy. By having everyone get hacked all the time, it cheapens their accomplishments. Instead of the group being stronger/more skilled/smarter than their opponents, it feels like mere luck that they didn't get wiped out. It's true that they are supposed to be less experienced, but you wouldn't know that without knowing this is a prequel, and it doesn't quite make sense when this threat is GitS:SAC's plus some extra. Ep.5 is supposed to be a bridge to the "New Movie". It feels not quite complete, so I guess that's correct. That ep. also made the tension from the physical fighting fizzle by resolving the matter through a less impressive hacking scene. Overall, not a bad entry in the franchise, certainly not as meh as the earlier comments made me expect, but it's not perfect really. We'll see how the movie fares. |

| Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (TV) | Excellent | This was great again though. The great art is back, and the music is awesome too (I'm going to check out more of Yoko Kanno's music). The story is very interesting. The Tachikoma are cute, funny, and even heroic. Kusanagi is still the only woman though, and she walks around in her underwear most of the time. I suppose we should be grateful the rest of the cast hardly remarks on it. All in all I liked the first TV series best. Highly recommended. |
| Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG (TV) | Very good | Also good, although the story is a little darker and more political/philosopical. The Tachikoma are back though, which makes up for the too-many-plot-twists-then-anti-climax ending of the series. |
| Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society (movie) | Good | So-so. It could have been a two episode story in either of the TV series, except that it takes place after the second season. The ending was very vague, and the first half of the movie too dark (literally that is). |
| Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie | Decent | Sequel of GitS: Arise AA. Well, this ties up the loose ends left from Arise and AA. I'd have to rewatch the original movie (or SAC?) to see if it does indeed end immediately before that. This movie's story is okay, but not great. Strange how despite the infodump moments, Arise etc. leave a lot of details to be inferred. I think other parts of the franchise made more sense. Or so I remember. Overall, Arise + AA + New Movie have a bit of a double ending problem. Arise was more or less complete, though it left some details vague. AA expanded on those to bridge to the movie, but was intentionally incomplete, then the movie ended that. AA + New Movie by themselves don't make a complete story though, they're only additions to Arise. The three together could've been on par with the SAC parts if they had been planned as one complete story from the start. So yeah, quite okay, but not as great as SAC etc. |
| Ghost Sweeper Mikami (movie) | So-so | One more story, showing all of the regulars doing their regular things. Unfortunately, including Yokoshima. The climactic battle gets rather deflated by Mikami suddenly being silly though, plus she had to be saved a bit too often. So overall it's not really a great addition. Well, the TV series wasn't all that great either, so maybe it fits. |
| Ghost Sweeper Mikami (TV) | So-so | I was in the mood for something trashy, and I saw some tweets about the GS Mikami game, so let's give this a try. Well, the first ep. looked like the main gag (Yokoshima) is going to become annoying real quick. Gag nr.2 would be Mikami being greedy, and 3 extreme reaction faces. I hope it'll get better. Well, the cases are mildly interesting, but the fact that everything is basically shown/told from Yokoshima's POV is getting annoying. It feels like even though Yokoshima gets punished, it is for his own behavior; Mikami meanwhile gets punished with Yokoshima's constant assaults for just existing. And finished. Mikami gets more POV later on, but there are still some (too many if you ask me) eps. where she needs rescued. Overall, Mikami is really cool, but her obsession with money makes her less likeable. Mostly it's Yokoshima though who drags the whole thing down to merely watchable. It's a comedy, so silliness is expected, but Yokoshima is really intolerable. |
| Gingitsune (TV) | Very good | Slice-of-life, supernatural, female MC. Sounds promising, ne? Reminds me of Wagaya No Oinarisama and Nekogami Yaoyorozu. The three girls becoming friends seems a little unlikely, but whatever. Yes, very slice-of-life. There's hardly any connection from one ep. to the next. Too bad it's only 12 eps. long. I'd like to see more about the spirits. |
| Girl Friend BETA (TV) | Not really good | Harem without the male protagonist, according to Tricky. Sounds interesting. Is it me, or do over half the characters sound like sedated 3-year-olds? Having one character like that can be charming, but if they all do it it's kinda freaky. I'm also noticing quite a bit of fanservice and moe designs. I hope this doesn't spoil the anime. You know, this reminds me very much of visual novels or picture dramas. Those have the same minimal animation and stilted conversations. Not surprising since this is based on a mobage. Well, if you accept that you're basically watching an audio drama/visual novel it's not bad. Just not really exciting either. I'm usually a fan of slice-of-life, but this is taking it a little too far. |
| (The) Girl Who Leapt Through Space (TV) | Not really good | The first ep. is a blur of stuff happening. Imo-chan is cute. Hmm, it looks like this is another one of those anime where you just have to watch the cool action and not try to make sense of the story. Well, Imo-chan is still cute, but the randomness/lack of explanations and fanservice are getting tiresome. This not making sense is becoming annoying. Stuff keeps happening without explanation. In fact every time someone asks what's going on they get interrupted or the answers only confuse matters even more. I'm up to ep.14 now. Should I keep watching? So far the characters were likeable at least, I'm afraid it's only getting worse, and the resolution will be disappointing. I ended up watching all if it. With some exceptions, the characters were likeable enough, although there were a lot of them, but the plot just swerved all over the place at the writer's whim of the day. There was unnecessary fanservice, but at least it was ignored by the characters themselves. Overall I can't really recommend it. |
| (The) Girl Who Leapt Through Time (movie) | Very good | It has a very interesting take on time-travel and its consequences. The art is very good, with the 3D blending fairly well with the regular 2D. It's also interesting that it shows a much more crowded setting than usual. The ending isn't full-out happy, but very much hopeful. |
| Girlish Number (TV) | Decent | About seiyuuing. Said to be underrated good by Andrea. Hmm, the first ep. goes for cynically realistic. Not sure if that's redundant actually. It's not quite snarky, but it doesn't shy away from commenting on the less glamorous aspects of the seiyuu industry. Chitose and the producer are quite dislikeable. It takes until ep.9 before they start noticing their failures though, and until the end of ep.10 before they start to turn around. ..And as expected, Chitose does turn around in the last two eps. Kuzu doesn't really, but by then everyone's adapted to doing more or less without him. This was a decent anime. Not super exciting or enjoyable, but it nicely avoided being depressing or annoying, even when the events weren't very upbeat. And it shows the seiyuu side of anime of course, that's worth something too. |
| Girls' Last Tour (TV) | Very good | Post-apocalyptic slice-of-life. The former seems like it would make for a melancholy story, but apparently it's nice instead. Well, it ended up being quite nice indeed, and pretty also. It's still also melancholy though. Very mono no aware, which.. isn't really my sort of thing. Overall I'm not sure I like it enough to want to buy it. |
| Glitter Force (TV) | Good | Ahh, PreCure ^_^ I think this is the first time we've seen a Kansai stereotype character in PreCure. Curiously, Akane introduces Nao as the sporty one, but Sunny's more like Yes! 5's Rouge. Miyuki is your standard pink Cure, although she seems to get her facial expressions from HeartCatch's Erika. Candy's a cute mascot like HeartCatch's. While I like that they added some humor, I feel like they went a little too far dumbing down the characters. New powerup in ep.12 already. That's very quick. Ep.14 fridge logic: why were those ladies visiting all the tourist spots in Osaka if they're from Osaka themselves? Aesir's subs are very liberal sometimes. This season's weird. Not much of a plot until ep.21, then in two eps. it's suddenly like a season finale, complete with ultimate-looking forms and the big bad getting vaporized. But if this is only the first half of the season, that means they'll have to build a new plot for the second half, which doesn't seem like a great idea :/ Hmm, looks like they just continue the same thing as before, so it was just a fake ending/reset. And there's a new countdown too. Ep.41/42 is going to be the next climax. Unless.. they mix things up. And now (ep.30) we have yet another toy, this time even with an in-ep. CM. Aesir's subs continue to be more like alternate retellings of the spoken Japanese than actual translations. Hmm, a string of eps. without plot progression. Eps.35 and 38 were fun, but the rest only so-so. It feels a bit cheap to replace actual plot progression with these clocks. After that we get another series of focus eps. with apparently a powerup for each Cure. Ep.45 finally ends the three regular villains and introduces the Bad End Cures. While it does have some twists, a lot of this season feels like we've seen it before, mostly in Yes! 5. These alternate Cures are like the ones from the Yes! 5 movie or the ones from the last powerup in HeartCatch. It's an interesting idea though, so that's okay. I'd like to see the evil versions stay around though. They always disappear so soon. Hmm, the ending was a little weak. Cool ultimate transformation and attack, which fails; lots of crying, lots and lots; regular powered-up transformation and attack; end with yet more crying; return of Candy; insert song epilogue. Could've used more convincing battle and less crying. Despite (or maybe because of) all the crying, I didn't cry myself at all. Overall, one of the weaker PreCure seasons. |
| Glitter Force Doki Doki (TV) | Very good | Oh, this season's pink Cure is not the usual clumsy one it seems. In fact, she's getting to be a little too unbelievably perfect. At the same time, battles seem to be a little like what I noticed in Suite PreCure; only a little actual fighting, then a quick victory through special attacks. It saves animation work I suppose, but it makes the Cures seem a little weak compared to some of the early seasons. Ep.11 and we've already got the first powerup. They're not going easy on the merchandise this season, what with all those Loveads and Ai-chan and now these items, all before even ¼ of the season is over. Plot- and character-wise things are changed up from the usual. The lower-rank villains are already resorting to self-destructive powerups, something that normally doesn't happen until the second half of the season. Makoto is a bit of an odd duck. She feels more like a half-season new character than a starter. I wonder if they'll keep up this pace of introducing new things or if it'll fizzle out somewhere. Ep.22/23 introduces Cure #5, who we haven't seen before it seems. From ep.24, it's not the princess at least. This season is quite unusual for a PreCure season. And just when I was beginning to like Regina, she's put on a bus. Well, that was indeed a refreshingly different season. Not all elements worked great, but overall the plot was good. The ending was a bit strange. First it was a double ending, with the second ending being kinda unnecessary, and then it ended with two worlds connected. The princess not returning was to be expected (otherwise they'd've lost a Cure). And I wasn't completely wrong in my prediction of Ai being the princess. Didn't expect three parts though. Pity that Regina will probably end up like Kaoru and Michiru, equal to the Cures, but never part of the All Stars stories. What wasn't so great was that they put even more emphasis than other seasons on the pink Cure being the leader. Everything/everyone revolved around Mana/Heart. Well, at least they didn't even pretend to be equals. Wish Toei would leave out the pink color just for once though. |
| Go! Princess Precure (TV) | Decent | Next season of PreCure, start! After this one I'll be caught up. Hmm, the OP feels fitting, but the ED isn't as catchy as some other seasons'. And there's some uncanny 3DCG faces again. I thought Toei had gotten over that, but I guess close-ups are still too much. This season is apparently one of the better ones, but I'm not entirely convinced on the princess thing yet. It's a little too stereotypical girly. Oh, we're already getting a new toy in ep.11? That's quicker than usual. Rods being waved around, we've seen that one before. Twilight shows up in ep.13. It's about time they introduced her if she's going to join about midway. Hmm, Twilight was defeated quite easily really, and her transformation into a Cure was also quick. Other heel-face turned Cures took longer (although that was too long, so I guess this is okay). Her new toy violin bow still looks like a sausage.. Towa joined in ep.22, but ep.24 still has the basic 3 Cures OP. Only the first sentence and the short walking scene have been updated. Oh, wait, there have been some more changes now (ep.26), but parts are still the original 3 Cures version :/ Around ep.33 we get a couple of eps. building up Haruka as center of the group. Can't have a pink Cure be just an ordinary team member of course. Things continue to be very feminine-normative. Nice for girly viewers, but I'd like there to be a little more balance. The drama in eps.38/39 feels fake. I mean, Kanata losing his memory is of course cliché, but him getting Haruka down feels out of character for both him and her. The resolution is predictable, Haruka comes back stronger than before, although it's at least a team powerup, not exclusive to her. Next is Kirara's rebirth. She's pretty cool, so her eps. were nice visually, but her one minute retirement and return felt fake. I guess next will be Minami? Yep, the next two eps. were all about Minami. Now we only have Towa left to have her crisis? Not sure if there's time for that. Ep.46 preview is about Shut finally getting defeated (he'd been near his end for the past two eps. already), which leaves only four eps. for both Close&co. and Dyspear herself. It's going to be a busy finale. Oh? Well, that's rather unexciting. Close gets reabsorbed without any fanfare into Dyspear, who gets defeated in ep.49. Ep.50 makes it a fake defeat by having Close replace Dyspear for a bit, but that's quickly taken care of and leaves about half the ep. for the conclusion. Well, overall I'd say this season wasn't really bad, but it wasn't one of the better ones. The dreams thing was okay, Minami, Kirara and Yui were good. The villains were pretty meh. Only Shut got any depth, and even that wasn't much. Kuroro never got any role again. Towa was the second of the team for a while, as expected, but after that kind of faded. When the others had their despair/rebirth stories she was left out, and at the end she was just back to her old status. Haruka was the usual pink Cure, even got a solo battle at the end :/ Her dream never really worked for me though. Minami and Kirara were serious (and pretty much going strong at them from the start), but Haruka never really had a chance. At the end they conveniently didn't go into detail as to what happened to her dream. Yui was pretty cool throughout, although I'd like to have seen more of her. The rest of the background characters got a decent amount of screentime in the beginning, but then faded away. The Cures' reveal to them at the end felt unnecessary. The whole princess thing in general didn't work very well either. Not just Haruka's dream, but all the other training and stuff more emphasised that princesses are there to look pretty than to kick ass. So, yeah, not completely bad, but no more than so-so. |
| Go! Princess Pretty Cure the Movie Go! Go!! Gorgeous Triple Feature!!! | Good | Heh, I finally get to watch this movie normally instead of trying out different ways of encoding the BD source. The first part is just a bit of silly fun. The 3D is well-made, but there's little story. I guess the little kids'll like it, and the 3D folks get to show off a little. The second part is what would usually be the whole movie; traditional 2D animation, and the usual story. PreCure gets transported to a fantasy kingdom, villain attacks the kingdom and/or PreCure, gets defeated with some help from Miracle Light™-waving audience. Yeah, they got those back again. I guess the last All Stars movie was a fluke not having them. Anyway, though the villain's approach is a little different, the rest of the story is (maybe because of the limited length) even flatter than usual PreCure movies. Part three is 3D again, but this time with a line-art filter. It looks pretty cool from a technical perspective, rendering 3D like that. It even does speedlines. It still has that sort of uncanny valley problem though. With this amount of realism, even if it's line-art filtered, you suddenly notice the side-mouth and side-nose faces. Or maybe I'm just paying too much attention to it. Anyways, the story is the standard again, but this has a cool vibe. Overall, it's no more so-so storywise than usual, and it gets bonus points for experimenting, even if it's not perfect. |
| Gourmet Girl Graffiti (TV) | Decent | Caught a bit of the chibi song on YT, and K-o-R said it was cute. Looks okay, so maybe give it a try? Yah, that eating is quite ero-poi, isn't it? Ryou reminds me of Hidamari Sketch's Hiro. It's not just the eating that's ero-poi, there's also a lot of fanservicey posing, like those butt poses in Amanchu. Well, the characters are nice, even if the eps. are fairly uneventful. All in all, a nice (though not top) slice-of-life anime, but it could've toned down the eating a little. |
| Granbelm (TV) | Very good | Yuri mecha. I think Andrea thought it okay? Guess I'll have to watch this. Isekai, but only once a month or so? It looks colorful at least. Also seems to be a battle royale-type fighting, which means the ending might not be happy? The character designs look familiar from Machikado Mazoku. Shingetsu making lilies bloom in ep.2 isn't very subtle, is it? Or maybe it is? Mangetsu's Armanox is called White Lily. In ep.3 it gets a little confusing as to who knows or hates who, but that gets cleared up gradually in later eps. One thing I like is how Nene doesn't just drop out of Granbelm and the end, but she and her sisters keep assisting the remaining mages. This anime is somewhat in the post-Madoka magical girl tradition in that it emphasizes negative feelings quite a bit, but it doesn't go overboard unlike some of those anime. Well, this anime certainly delivered on the colorful chibi mecha battles. It ended up rather melancholy overall, what with all the mages being eliminated over the series. Like I said above, it's better than most post-Madokas, but still not quite super happy. The ending is a little ambiguous, but that kinda fits. Overall it's pretty good though, certainly recommended. |
| Grenadier (TV) | Not really good | Kinda like Koihime Musou with guns, only much more ridiculous, and with more men. The only good thing so far is that it will only last 12 eps. Well, it never really got any better. It's a so-so story drowned in silly fanservice. |
| Grrl Power (OAV) | Good | Interesting concept and execution, but I'm not sure it would be able to fill more than a few eps. (say, 5 or 6). As it is, it seems it never got off the ground for more than one episode. The animation style is a little reminiscent of modern NAmerican animation in some aspects, and the premise is rather unique in anime too. Interesting too is that one of the main characters is apparently deaf-mute and communicates only in sign language. There's something you never see. This anime is definitely worth the time, if only for its refreshing difference. |
| Gunbuster (OAV) | Weak | *lol* Anime from 1988 that still features a Soviet Union. The makers not only didn't understand basic physics and astronomy, but have no sense of scale either. Pfft. Ep. 6 is in black&white, which makes the whole thing look even more antique. And a large part is just moving shots of the manga. How cheap. Overall, the story is rather boring. Some scenes are supposed to be dramatic, but there isn't really any character development. I have no idea why this anime is rated so high. Maybe it's old-school fans blinded by nostalgia. I'll look up the story for Aim For The Top 2. If it's more of the same I'm not going to bother watching it. |
| Gunbuster 2: Diebuster (OAV) | Good | Well, at least this one looks more modern, doesn't have all the technobabble, and doesn't pretend to be realistic. It looks a lot like FLCL indeed. That silly colorful style is unmistakable. Hmm, it's also just as fanservicey as FLCL, and the events are difficult to follow because very little is explained properly. Nono and Lal'C are sympathetic characters, so I was disappointed that they didn't get to be together in the end. |

For such a short anime (only 13 eps.) it doesn't move very quickly though. Wow, someone really wanted to get their money's worth out of that footsteps soundtrack :þ Overall I think it was a good anime, but very short. Good art, meh or non-existent music, intriguing characters, not much character development, decent but short story. I've heard the second season is bad, so I'm not sure if I should watch it. Rewatching this, it feels quite moe. The pity the broken birds kind of moe. Certainly not bad, but it could've been deeper. Between the action scenes and the short length, the characters don't get much development. |
