| Kami-sama Minarai: Himitsu no Cocotama (movie) | Decent | A standalone story with a new movie-only cocotama, and cameos from all the previously seen cocotamas (incl. Cinemaru from S2, but not yet Lychee). Most only appear in one scene though. I think this is the first time there's some negative power mentioned. It looked like it was there only for tension in the movie though. |

Hmm, a lot of time is spent on new toys that fit awkwardly into the setting. Let's get back to less commercial stories, okay? Oh, ep.127 suddenly introduces a new cocotama who gets shown in both the OP and ED. Lychee disappeared from them though. I guess it was time for another reset? So eps.77-126 have Hikari&Lychee's slow-developing plot, along with the usual generic cocotama stuff, eps.127-139 have Kanna & Sui's plot. And that's all about Kokoro & friends. There's a third season with new characters, but I'm a bit cocotama'd out atm ^_^; |
| Kamichama Karin (TV) | Weak | Wow, that was a packed first ep. The opening scene had too many guys though, and the one that showed up later was kind of annoying. Probably too much to hope that he gets offed soon. Yep, that's the way it is. Twelve eps. in the plot, as it is, is still just an excuse for childish romcom antics. I wish they'd cut the filler and get to the actual plot. Halfway through we get some hints of a plot, but by ep.19 there's still not much revealed. The opening scene still doesn't make sense in any case. I didn't like how Karin gave up on Kirika as soon as she found out they're a girl. And both Kazune and Michiru have problems respecting Karin's personal space. Michiru's behavior in particular could be seen as sexual assault. And then in the end we get some rushed info dumping that only explains about half the mysteries, badly. Also deus ex machina, although I suppose that's sort of half-appropriate in an anime about god transformations. |
| Kamichu! (TV) | Excellent | Cute and funny, just what I need at the moment. The first ep. reminded me of Ponyo. And then the second had elements similar to Spirited Away. I'd recommend this anime to fans of Miyazaki/Ghibli's fairytale movies. Second time watching (from DVD). Hehe. Guess I hadn't watched much anime yet the first time. I'd compare it to Gingitsune, Inari KonKon, Nekogami Yaoyorozu now. I didn't remember that this is set in the 1980s. The old phones make sense now. |
| Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens (TV) | Decent | Starts off as an interesting mix of supernatural, magical girl, and slice-of-life comedy genres, but mostly abandons the former aspects later on. There is a lot of fanservice and some of the comedy is a bit adolescent. Is it me or does the art/animation quality get worse over the course of the series? Some questions raised by the first few episodes (the 'impurities', Hakua, idolhood for survival) are never answered. Overall it appears as if both the budget ran out and the anime overtook the manga. Maybe a sequel will be made some day that finishes the story. |
| Kanon (TV 2/2006) | Very good | Moe overload! Seriously, this is almost as much as Ichigo Mashimaro. I wonder what kind of plot, if any, there will be though. I still don't like moe too much. I like cuteness a lot; a little clumsiness can be endearing too, but this over the top cuteness combined with exaggerated stupidity is just too much for me. It makes the characters unbelievable and annoying. Well, I'll give it a few more eps. Maybe it will get more interesting. Well what do you know, it did get more interesting. With some supernatural mystery and all. Kanon's visual novel dating-sim roots show in the sometimes a little stilted dialogue and abrupt scene changes, but the plot makes up for that. There is a little more tragedy/sadness at times than I would prefer in my anime, but it's not overwhelming. This anime ended up being a lot better than I expected at first. |

They've already started dating before, and their life together in Tokyo is only about to start at the very end. So nothing much really happens. But it is so beautiful ^_^ |
| Kasimasi - Girl Meets Girl (TV) | Excellent | Great. Lovely sweet romance ♡ but with many bittersweet scenes too, so keep the tissues handy :_; Too bad it was so short (only 12 eps.). Second time: There's some pretty awkward moments especially in the first half or so, but overall it's nice. I wonder though if they couldn't have a poly ending. The OVA is basically a reset-alternative ending, stop at ep.12 for Yasuna, add ep.13 for Tomari. It has an OVA feel to it too, what with the silly cameos and extravagant end. I only now realized that the title is read as Kashima-shi btw, just the name of the city it's set in. |

| Katsugeki Shōjo Tantei Dan (OAV) | So-so | Yuri. It's short, so let's give it a try. Wow, old video looks old, and a bit cheap. I get the feeling it's just one short story out of a longer series, but ANN doesn't list a manga. I saw some images from video games, but those were probably made later, considering this is from 1986. Ah well. This was pretty dumb. Not bad dumb, just lacking any kind of depth. |
| Kaze no Matasaburo (OAV) | Not really good | Kenji Miyazawa story. This version seems closer to the original. It looks a lot rougher and simpler than the 2016 Anime Tamago version. I like the newer one better. |
| Kaze no Matasaburō (movie) | Decent | Anime Tamago 2016 Cute sketchy style ^_^ There's not much of a story though. Just a girl who visits the countryside for a few days. Matasaburou himself doesn't even play much of a role. |
| Kemono Friends (TV) | Excellent | "Surprise hit of 2017-Q1".. Well, it looked interesting before that, so let's give it a try. Decided to watch this first because I was feeling a bit down and Planetarian is from Key. This is certainly upbeat. It does have an amateur 3D feel. Simple, empty environments/backgrounds, few moving things, wooden movements. This anime was super cute and sweet ^_^ About the only thing that was a little much was Kaban being specialer than everyone else. The 3D being imperfect didn't really bother me. The ending left a little bit open for a second season, so I hope there'll be more Friends ^_^ |
| Kemurikusa (TV) | Good | From the makers of Kemono Friends. I'm not so sure about one of the main characters being a boy, but let's see where it goes. It seems this is (partially?) a remake of an original anime made by the Irodori team back in 2012. That one doesn't have an ANNcyclopedia entry though, so here goes: very post-apocalyptic, with some not quite human sisters, Rin (fast & strong), Ritsu (manipulates water/roots and can teleport others), and Rina (fights too, sextuplet, soon reduced to quintuplet), who fight against bugs which are after the water. Then a boy named Wakaba shows up and helps them out a bit. Not quite clear how the world works or came to be that way. Mostly it's short conversations and action scenes. I guess that makes sense from a technical (crude 3D) point of view. Let's watch the remake next. The 0.x eps. seem to be a slightly different setting? Or maybe they're short vignettes from before the original story (when there were a few more sisters, and Rina wasn't split up yet). Hmm, so there was a person named Riri who split up into the six sisters to rescue Wakaba. Meh, so it was a love story after all. Ep.11 and half of ep.12 were a flashback that tells the beginning of the story. The world doesn't really make much sense though, especially with the ending showing they were all inside something (a ship they called it?) and there's a regular world outside. The way Rina and Ritsu just sort of sacrifice themselves for Rin/Wakaba is meh as well. The 12.1 ep. shows that the sisters and original!Wakaba who actually died end up in some alternate version of the world inside the ship? Well, just a hint in that direction. Overall it's all quite intriguing, but the vagueness and the love story detract from it. What is interesting though is seeing the parallels with Kemono Friends. A post-apocalyptic world and in it a person who died and is revived without their memories, which they find hints at on their travels. Makes me wish there had been a real season 2 of Kemono Friends made by the Irodori folks. They made S1 long after the original 2012 Kemurikusa, so I guess it was an evolved form of that idea. Then when S2 was taken from them they went back to the original's setting. KF's setting was nicer though (and it didn't have any Wakabas). |
| Key the Metal Idol (OAV) | Not really good | Hmm, early 90s art and animation. Modern anime has fewer slow pans and more dialogue I think. The introduction leaves a lot of detail for the viewer to infer. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it takes a while to get into an anime this way. Key's motivation in particular isn't made clear at all. Maybe the subtitles were copied from the dub again. They don't always match what is said. In particular, Key referring to herself in third person sounds a little contrived in English. Well, that was my first impression. After watching all of it and reading the Wikipedia article, I understand why the quality was rather low in the first 13 eps. and the last two eps. were suddenly much longer. The unusual release tactic does not excuse the extremely bad writing though. Seriously, if this was a novel, you could teach a whole semester worth of 'how to write a novel' using only this anime for bad examples. The first 13 eps. explain almost nothing of the characters' motivation, just walking around in place, telling a story that doesn't go anywhere, with characters that mostly don't develop. Then ep. 14 is one and a half hour of exposition. Some of it is shown, some of it is just talking heads, but it is all one big plot dump. Ep. 15 is the only decent one because then you actually know what is going on. Unfortunately it kills off the most sympathetic main character and brings back several irrelevant characters, then ends in a predictable and not very satisfying way. Yep, this is one anime that didn't live up to its hype at all. |

| Kiddy Grade (TV) | Not really good | This was a little weird. The story seemed to take a few abrupt twists in direction. At first it was very light and kinda silly, then it became a little darker when a conspiracy was half-revealed. Then the main characters appeared to switch personalities abruptly. After a few episodes it turned out the world was still the same, but the characters never fully recovered I felt. Then the final arc was very flashy and dramatic again, but by then I didn't really care about the whole thing much anymore. Overall it's not very bad, but not exactly good either. Also, there are too many panty-shots that serve absolutely no purpose other than to make the creators of the anime look like twelve year old boys. |
| Kiki's Delivery Service (movie) | Very good | A pretty cute kids' movie ^_^ I didn't realize Kiki's seiyuu also voices Ursula. Kinda emphasizes she's talking to an older version of herself. The whole Tonbo romantic angle felt forced, as such things always are in kids' fiction :/ It would've been nice if Kiki were shown using or at least trying to use more magic than just flying. Still a nice movie overall ^_^ |

| Kimagure Robot (TV) | Decent | Watching out of curiosity. Doesn't seem to be what I thought it might be, but it's very short, so why not. Well, it was short and a bit silly, nothing special really. |
| Kinmoza! Kiniro + Mosaic (TV) | Decent | It's kinda like reversed Croisée, with a big dash of Strawberry Marshmallow-style moe. The girls are supposed to be in high school, but they look and act more like they're in primary school. I wonder how quickly the stereotyping of Westerners/Japanese is going to become annoying. They've mostly lost the Croisée aspect, and the Strawberry Marshmallow aspect is also not as strong. Now it's more like, uh, A-Channel or something? Yah, after the first few eps. it mostly meanders between SM and A-C, with the foreigner thing only occasionally being mentioned. I guess they had some budget left over at the end and decided to blow it on a grand finale. Put the 4-koma in a weird order though, first the new school year, then back to the first year for the fairytale, then way back for the letter. Anyway, overall it's entertaining, but not really good enough to own. |

| Kino's Journey (TV) | Good | I think it's.. dreamy. Like watching something that's kinda random, mostly pleasant, but sometimes melancholy or scary, but with a detached feeling, like it's not really happening to you. Hmm, yes, that's about what this anime feels like. One thing though, the visual style will be very dated in a few years. A 'next-gen' color palette, artificial scanlines, and bloom lighting everywhere. |

| Kirakira Precure a la Mode (TV) | Very good | A double theme this seasons, sweets and animals. The first ep. was nice, but not very impressive. In particular the live-action bits and the lack of fighting were meh. Oops, forgot to update this for a whole year ^_^; As it turned out, the lack of fisticuffs wasn't as big a deal as expected, and the live-action bits were short and were only in some eps. This season ended up being pretty good. In particular the character development and the villains were done well. I'd subtract some points for Elisio and Noir getting off too lightly at the end, and Yukari×Akira not even being mentioned toward the finale, but otherwise this season ranks quite high. |
| Kirakira Precure a la Mode: Paris to! Omoide no Mille-Feuille! (movie) | Very good | A cute movie. I'm now following Precure live, so KKPCALM was already over by the time the movie was subbed. It was nice to see the KiraPati gang again (no Bibury and Rio though). Cure Kirarin was cute, but should've had more screentime. The animal forms were also really cute. Jean-Pierre and Cook were okay I guess. Too bad Solaine didn't even appear. They could've at least shown her. |
| Kite (OAV) | Bad | Apparently it's quite good, and I generally like the girls-with-guns genre. I'm not sure which version I should watch though. The uncut, complete one, or the one without the porn? Eww, blegh! Turns out I got the one with the porn in it. Disgusting, really. And the rest of the anime doesn't make up for it in any way. It's from 1998, but looks like something from the '80s or early '90s. The story is barely there, more implied than told. And there's a lot of graphic violence. Of course you'd expect gunfire in this genre, but here the results are shown in detail. Blood and body parts fly everywhere. And then there's the rape. A lot of it was clearly inserted afterwards because the continuity breaks show, but even without that this would be a very disturbing anime. Yech. Excuse me while I go take a shower and try to scrub those images from my brain.. |
| Kite Liberator (OAV) | So-so | The animation is quite good. The character designs are a little peculiar, but not too weird. There isn't overly much fanservice fortunately. Monaka is cool in her assassin role, although of course quite bloody. This OVA feels like a pilot for a longer series though, mostly because the story ends with a lot of details unfinished. The monster isn't dealt with yet, there are many intriguing things about Monaka's life that are only briefly shown, and lots of potential character development is left up in the air. |

| Kobato. (TV) | Not really good | This anime is very much Clamp. The character designs (girly girls, tall/broad guys, lanky women), the apartment where Kobato lives, the more-than-meets-the-eye happy do-gooding. Oh, and let's not forget the guys being very slashable. Hmm. This series doesn't really know what it wants to be. There is too much drama and foreboding for it to be slice-of-life, but there's also too little actual plot and story for it to be more than that. The daycare that was a focus for many episodes is eventually just shrugged off, and the stuff that's been vaguely hinted at for even longer only comes out in the last two episodes. All in all it wasn't a complete waste of time, but I do find myself wondering why it was even made. |
| Koihime Musō (TV) | Weak | It's been on my to-watch list for a while now. I think it was discussed in the contest thread or something. The 'yuri' theme looks interesting, but the 'ecchi' theme probably negates that. The first episode makes me think it might be like Utawarerumono a little: warriors banding together to overthrow some (yet unknown) oppressor. Lots of fanservice indeed. Don't anime makers realize breasts that large make jumping around painful? The fight between Kan'u and Lin Lin looked rather fake, like one of those silly shounen anime. Oh well, it's only 12 eps., so let's just watch it. Hmm. The story didn't really get much better, and the fanservice turned really ecchi several times. It is indeed like Utawarerumono in that it is based on a strategy game. I guess you can never really make a good story out of something like that because it depends too much on the battles. |
| Kokoro Library (TV) | Good | I'd say that this anime is kinda in the middle between Aria and Ichigo Mashimaro. Like Aria, it is a slice-of-life anime without any plot, just cute characters doing stuff at a very relaxed pace. Like Ichigo Mashimaro, it is aimed at a seinen audience with a bit of a fetish for little girls in frilly clothes. It's a pity that it has to be that way, but I suppose that's this genre's version of fanservice :/ This isn't the greatest slice-of-life anime, but it's worth watching. |
| Komori-san Can't Decline (TV) | So-so | Seems to be similar to Aiura and Morita-san Wa Mukuchi.. Indeed it is; even shorter though, only 2min. including the ED. Not so sure how I feel about the guy they added from ep.6. All in all it's too short really to say much about it. |
| Konohana Kitan (TV) | Excellent | Slice-of-life. Cute/supernatural. Hmm, yes, a nice, cute, relaxing slice-of-life anime. That was truly lovely. I want to own this anime. And I hope it gets a sequel. |

| Kumi to Tulip (movie) | Good | Unvoiced, music only. A sweet, cute story, with an ending that's a little sad. The action scene at the beginning is a bit long for its importance. |
| Kurage no Shokudō (OAV) | Good | Anime BG Art tweeted a screenshot that looked pretty. It's short, so why not? Interesting. It's like a pilot for something longer, except that the secrets are already revealed here. Cute and fluffy, with a serious undertone. Might appeal to yaoi fans? |
| Kurau: Phantom Memory (TV) | Excellent | Ooh, very good. Nice modern animation, with a mixture of action and more character-oriented plot. It looks like it shares quite a few staff members with Planetes. Wow, that was just awesome. Kurau and Christmas are so sweet together, and the other characters are almost all nice too. The way it combines bits of action with lots of character interaction reminds me of Witchblade. This anime goes on the to-buy list immediately. Second time watching. It's still really good. Kurau just disappearing at the end was a bit weird, but it all ended happily eventually. The animation was pretty good, but the characters' faces went a little off-model at times. Nothing really bad though. |
| Kuro no Su - Chronus (movie) | Good | This had a 'psychological' tag, so I expected it to be dark and heavy, but that was a mistake and it's actually a sweet love story. Still with a dark theme, but the ending is happy. |
| Kurogane Communication (TV) | Good | Oh, this anime has short eps.; only 15 min. I wonder where this premise will go. Hmm, that was pretty good. A little rushed because of the short eps., but that also means you're always looking forward to the next ep. The ending was a bit weird. All this talk of the robots being Haruka's family, and then they make her go alone with Kanato. As if he's more important than them. And then there's the sudden parenthood. Yes, the ending could have been better, but overall it's still quite entertaining. (amazon link) |
| Kuromajyo-san ga Tōru!! (TV) | Very good | Sounds a bit like a kids' version of Flying Witch? Directed by Kimiko Ueno. Oh, they don't spend much time on the setup of the story. Just a few quick shots with voice-over. Welp. Hmm, 7min. is pretty short, including a 30sec. OP and 20sec. repeated intro. At least there's no ED. With such short eps., the plots move very quickly at least, but that leaves some holes here and there. Choko seems ace/aro to me, the way she feels uncomfortable with those two guys' attention and Gyubid foisting that love herb on her. So why do they keep trying that sort of thing? :( Overall, very nice anime. |
| Kuromajyo-san ga Tōru!! (TV 2/2013) | Very good | More or less a direct continuation of S1 (although with stand-alone eps. there's really no difference). The story-telling is still kinda clumsy now and then. Probably because the eps. are too short to bother with proper foreshadowing and explanations. Oh, with eps.53-56 we even get a 4 part story, finally confirming Choko's grandma is Tika. There's no real conclusion to the anime, only a confirmation that they'll continue as they are. Ah well, maybe that leaves room for another season some day? This was a nice and cute anime ^_^ |
| Kuttsukiboshi (OAV) | So-so | A short OVA that tells only a part of a story. Disappointing in that neither Kiiko's telekinesis nor the relationship between Kiiko and Aaya is given much detail or development, and the ending both comes out of the blue and is bleh. |
| Kyōran Kazoku Nikki (TV) | Decent | Lighthearted wacky entertainment for when you don't want anything too deep or complex. Toward the end it becomes rather hard to follow. |
| Kyousougiga (TV) | Good | Let's check out this director Rie Matsumoto and her series Kyousogiga. I think this TV series covers the same story as the ONAs plus more? Well, the first ep. (ep.0 that is) is pretty confusing already. The art is pretty (and pretty wacky too) though. Three eps. in very little makes any sense yet. I hope things will become clear in the end; I don't want another vaguely symbolic something. And they lived happily ever after, just like they did before. I feel like most of this anime's complexity comes from the story being told out of order. If you put it in order, it wouldn't be very complex at all. The art is really good, even when it's simple; there's a lot of movement to keep things interesting; and the characters are nice too. Mama Koto doesn't get a lot of background though and she's the second coolest character, after daughter Koto (yah, names are reused for different characters in this anime; Myoue is at different times used for papa Myoue/Inari and son Myoue/Yakushimaru). In the order the story is told, it sags a little toward the end. That part could've been told in less time. Overall, definitely worth seeing, but I'm not sure it's worth owning. |

| Lagrange - The Flower of Rin-ne (TV) | Good | A bit stripperiffic and male-gazey now and then, but a cool first ep. The next few eps. continue to be cool (the music in particular), but the story moves a little slow. (notes lost due to ANN data loss) The pacing isn't very good in this anime. It can't decide whether to be slice-of-life or action. Likewise, the story progression is also unevenly paced. Some eps. you get an infodump, some are story-wise complete filler. We're told the girls are close friends, but hardly see them hang out together; Madoka loves Kamogawa, but we only see her at school or at the café and never with the town folks. I feel that this anime has the potential to be awesome, but it just doesn't pull it off. The two seasons should've been put together as one whole series from the start. As it is, season one tries to have a sort-of conclusion/climax, but it leaves so many things unanswered that it doesn't really work. |
