DVD should've been dropped 5 years when PS4s became a near-household object and blu-ray players could be found for $10.

I had problems with Media Blasters' DVDs LONG before they went to their on-demand model. The thing that kept me from buying their Blu Rays was the fear of the same problems.

Well it's inevitable your sales will drop when you don't release anything new, only relying on your current catalog of things we already have, and I wouldn't blame anyone who gets an MB title expecting a professional pressed DVD and receives one of their crappy DVD-R releases and marks it as pirated because it's essentially the same thing pirates release only "official".

I didn't know DVD-on-demand was a thing they were doing.

We're in a time of flux as more stuff comes to VOD (and as we own less and less). We're also entering a recession. A decade ago, before and during the last recession, we lost Bandai, ADV (kinda), Geneon USA and CPM. If you asked me to name possible casualties this time around, Media Blasters would be at the top of the list. Discotek, AnimEigo, Nozomi, they're really prudent boutique distributors, they're going to be fine.

Exactly. Even if they were legit discs, the quality would easily lead someone to believe they got a bootleg. When they announced this sales model and that they were sticking with DVD-R for what few old titles they have, I genuinely had to question why they didn't decide it was time to close shop for good.

At this point, I'm fairly convinced that Media Blasters is treated as someone's hobby where they don't care about making money and just want to keep it going for as long as they can. At some point, the licenses they have will expire. The ones they had for bigger titles expired already, so at some point it will have to end when they have nothing left to sell.

Hobby? Nah... I am 55 but I will keep doing it till I die. You may be surprised about the future. There is always room somewhere and I have been finding that in the days of ADV, than Geneon and will continue.

I know as up to date fans we're all scoffing at this, but there really are people who don't get Blu-rays - with reasons ranging from not having a player to not knowing what a Blu-ray even is (which kind of makes sense when you consider some folks video watching habits went from VHS to DVD to digital). In fact I am pretty sure there are people who do not know their PS4 or Xbox One can play Blu-rays.

Since, as they mentioned, DVD sales are dropping, there surely aren't as many by now, but I suppose it's saying something they still see it as worth it to do pressed DVDs for a limited set of titles.

I can personally assure you that their blu-rays are not problematic--Zeiram 2 in particular has never looked/sounded more beautiful and I'm eagerly anticipating they give the first movie a similar release soon.

The subtitle track on my copy of the Media Blasters Strawberry Panic Bluray lags by about a half second behind the spoken dialogue, and it replaced every instance of "é" with "e□" (and people say "étoile" about a dozen times an episode in that show). I've never had that sort of problem with a Bluray from any other company.

Y'know, when we're all complaining about Crunchyroll getting sold to Sony, which already owns Funimation and Aniplex USA, maybe a tiny company trying to tough it out like Media Blasters is something we should support. If that makes them the less cool / more horny version of Discotek (but with one third the release slate)… well, there are worse things to be.

Never saw Strawberry Panic on blu-ray (still have the old single DVD's), although I wonder if it has anything to do with it being more technically SD-format rather than a genuine transfer. With Zeiram 2 I believe they used the Japanese master, which is why everything looks so good on that.

Even though I've had a ps4 for years now, I still buy dvd most of the time. Mainly so I have more options of where to play them such as the computer or my portable dvd player...

I'll take a guess and say that it's because their shitty burned dvds were problematic and they had numerous complaints about them. From my experience from a burned dvd set-the discs refused to play on any of my 3 dvd players and would only play on my Panasonic bluray player-not on my Sony or Samshit bluray players.
