Okay, I'll give Idris some credit, he's pretty good as Knuckles.

That scene of Knuckles stopping Sonic's Spin Dash (Chef's Kiss). Also sounds like Elba's going for a more American accent for Knux?

I'm glad it looks like a Sonic and Tails duo movie.

Interestingly, the movie will be released in Japan as Sonic the Movie: Sonic VS Knuckles (ソニック・ザ・ムービー ソニック VS ナックルズ).

"VS" in Japan doesn't mean what it's supposed to mean

"VS" in Japan is the equivalent of "&"

So why was Tails the only one to keep his current voice from the games while Sonic and Knuckles don't?

Are you sure "VS" in Japan is the equivalent of "&" instead of "tai" (対, "versus")?

I was also wondering this. My guess is that during the production of the first movie, some actors auditioned for Tails and Colleen O'Shaughnessey happened to be one of them. The producers felt that O'Shaughnessey nailed it and gave her the part. For the sequel, rather than finding a new voice actor for Tails, they gave O'Shaughnessey the opportunity to reprise her role.

The first movie shouldn’t have been good especially after that disastrous initial design. And yet, here we are. It’s nice to be pleasantly surprised.

Yeah, it's a tradition - they treat it ala "&" in the titles. Even going all the way back from the likes of Mazinger Z vs. Devilman where they work together against a common baddie

She probably got the job from guide tracking as the original VA for Tails

The renowned Tara Strong explains it in her Vanity Fair YT interview why voice actors like to guide track for big Hollywood productions:
