I guess after A Whisker Away was picked up by Netflix, they started working closer with them for Drifting Home. Excited to see more about this new movie, and what the 3rd one will end up being.

I guess they haven't seen how people view Netflix lately, how their stock dropped, and how many subscribers Netflix is gonna lose (around 2 million by Netflix's own estimates). Likely will lose when they cancel a ton of shows soon. I don't think investing in netflix is a good idea

Not sure why Studio Colorido should care about that. A contract is a contract, and that gives the studio work. |

it's an easy deal. since studio coloridor always produce Original Anime Movie.
there's high chance it will flopping hard in box office, Deal with Netflix is a win-win. because garuntee the amount of money they will get. |

Obviously knowing the full details of the contract, like the $ amount, would be far more helpful in determining the soundness of the deal.
From Coloridor's perspective, it's likely a win. They have a contract in place now, so short of Netflix itself going bankrupt, they have a decent bit of financial certainty for a few years. They may have had a chance at eking out more money by selling the movies one at a time, but that's a bigger gamble. This was the likely better route for them. But it strikes me as somewhat odd from Netflix's perspective. They're freaking out over what is honestly a relatively small drop in subscribers, mainly because it's their first. Beyond that, however, they mentioned wanting/needing to be more frugal in their spending. Perhaps they see a lot of potential with these movies and felt a 3-yr deal now was cheaper than doing a deal a at time for each movie? In any case, it appears at first blush to be more a doubling down on current practices rather than an attempt to recalibrate, as no matter how artistically minded the decision here is, it's not likely to be a volume play, which is what they seemingly need to be aiming for. In the broader mix of stuff they're doing it might eventually make more sense, but at the moment it just seems like an unusual choice. |
