I imagine the "most of" wording in the announcement will likely apply to new anime being produced by certain companies that Sentai wouldn't normally be able to license from, in the first place. For example, Aniplex has had a long history of its anime debuting on MBS (dating all the way back to Fullmetal Alchemist in 2003, at the very least), so I'm sure anything from Aniplex is off limits.

That being said, though, this is still a big deal. While MBS is just the network that first airs these shows, having that network as a partner to facilitate licensing deals is the exact kind of boon that Sentai & Hidive needs to properly compete with Crunchyroll.

Glad to see that AMC buying Hidive/Sentai has been laying off, since Hidive is the only other platform besides Crunchyroll that exclusively deals with anime it’s nice to see Hidive becoming more competitive.

Unless someone can correct me I think Sentai's exclusivity only applies to shows where MBS is the MAIN PRODUCER or #1 on the committee list.

So shows like Endo and Kobayashi where MBS is #1 on the production committee list is fair game.

I’m curious what the licensing situation for ‘The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses’ is going to be. MBS is the main producer for that anime, since their YouTube channel posts all the trailers, but it’s also based on a Kodansha manga, and apparently most future anime based on manga by Kodansha are going to stream on Disney+/Hulu as part of the deal that they made. So, I wonder if it will be licensed by Sentai or Disney.

I think those by Kodansha is gonna be an exception to the rule.

As far as I’ve seen it doesn’t seem that Disney will be getting majority of Kodansha titles but more of their heavy hitters (for example this season they have Tokyo revengers and next season Heavenly dilusion). As of now Crunchyroll is still distributing a good number of Kodansha titles, this season alone they’re streaming like 10-11 anime’s based on Kodansha work and I believe that as of now they’re are 3 confirmed for next season.

Didn't Crunchyroll licensed the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie? I still think that CR has Jujutsu Kaisen S2. It would be incredibly stupid if CR wasn't able to bought the rights to S2 along with the movie.

Yes. Toho Animation is #1 on the production committee so Toho would have the final say. Pretty sure CR have already licensed S2.

MBS is also a committee member for Nagatoro, Rent a Girlfriend and Girlfriend Girlfriend but the main producers are Kings Record, DMM and NBC Universal Japan respectively. Though these are all Kodansha mangas so these upcoming sequels might not be safe from Disney’s deal…

Your post made me remember that Vinland Saga is by Kodansha. Some people were already angry that Neflix was going to stream it, even though Crunchyroll is streaming it as well, so I can imagine the furor if Disney+ was exclusively streaming it. Also, the press release did say only anime based on Kodansha manga, so I assume light novel adaptions are not part of the deal, and Crunchyroll is in the production committee for In/Spectre, and Tomo Chan Is a Girl!, so that’s probably why they are streaming it. But, I wonder why Tokyo Revengers was part of the deal, but Vinland Saga S2, and Onimai were not. I guess we’ll have to wait and see if Disney are only going to handpick a few titles by Kodansha each season, and the rest go to Crunchyroll, or Sentai.

It’s possible they didn’t get Onimai because maybe they think it wouldn’t have pulled in good numbers for them, idk exactly how popular the manga is(I’ve personally have been enjoying the anime) it seems that they really are only interested in getting the really big IPs from Kodansha. Though like you mention it is curios that they didn’t get Vinland saga since it’s a major Kodansha title. I’ve noticed that as of now they are only doing one Kodansha title per season so maybe they are just looking to get whichever is the biggest Kodansha title of the season. I gotta say though I’m curious to see how long this partnership will last as I know that overall people have been mixed with Disney getting involved in anime given their “worldwide releases”especially if financially these anime titles are not bringing in good numbers for them.

Nice to see more competition. It will be interesting to see how this works out for Hidive.

You'd normally know If something is on Dinsey long before it starts. Heavenly Delusions' streamimg platform was announced months ago. With Hidive it's anywhere from a couple of months to a couple of weeks and likewise with Crunchyroll except sometimes it's a day before it airs.

As others have said here, Disney seems to be getting around 1 exclusive a season. They also not worried about obtaining already established shows. I am guessing, they are taking more serious and mature titles (Summer Time Render, Tokyo Revengers, Heavenly Delusion) to draw in a older audience? Dinsey has a reputation of being for younger generations.

AMC buying Sentai always felt like a weird attempt at portfolio diversification, since you don't associate the AMC Networks with animation (their one recent attempt at it was abruptly canceled and written off for taxes) and while I like HiDive (inexpensive, has all the Lupin) it does on occasion feel like an also-ran to Crunchyroll and Netflix, the comfortable #3 for fans of the material, and that's OK.

But this is a big deal. First run, direct access to material is probably their biggest move into the distribution space since the purchase, and the sort of deal one cant ignore.

Hopefully I’m not the only one, but I don’t feel like this is going to be as big of a deal as some people think. I think this is more of chest beating moment that’s not going to lead to much.
