I am legitimately surprised that this show still has enough of a following/hype for this to occur. Then again, someone appears to think so regardless of the reality of the situation.

I can't believe they're going this far after the mess season 2 was
I figured after they clearly cut budget and also cut out so much of the original books that you could feel the content just oozing out of every surface it meant no one involved in the anime decisions actually cared about it anymore |

People seem to have forgotten that Shield Hero was such a hit during its first season that two additional seasons were greenlit simultaneously. That doesn't happen very often. Even the recurring seasonal shows like MHA only announce 1 new season at a time.
I never watched the second season, but I've heard that it was poorly received. Even still, the initial investment was made early on. I'm guessing Seasons 2 + 3 were developed back to back, so it makes sense that they'd try to regain the lost momentum and make the most of the situation. I doubt we'll see a fourth season any time soon though. |

I admit Season 2 wasn't the most thrilling and seemed rush, and I know it wasn't well received by weeb critics, but you got to remember the amount of casuals viewers could be very many people. The people that log on here, and Reddit, and I would even argue anime discords are not the majority. It kind of reminds me of the loud vocal SAO minority. Yes, sometimes I forget that I am not the average viewer.

Season 1 was dumb fun, Season 2 was just dumb and painful.
Surprise it is getting a season 3 but I hope the quality of the story is better |

For the people acting "surprised" that this is getting a third season - it literally got announced on the same day as S2. In fact, the way this is being handled gives me the impression that it was supposed to be a 2-cour season just like S1 was, but production issues likely caused it to be split and they decided t brand it as two different seasons. But that's just my theory.
Yay, someone that talks about """"clearly""" cutting budget as if it's fact, but completely ignoring the industry's growing issues that could've actually lead to the lower quality.... anyway, no one in animation actively tries to do something bad on purpose just to f**k with the fanbase. It's clear from the interviews with Masato Jinbo that he simply didn't really understand the series as a whole and thus made a bunch of really questionable decisions, which paired with poor visuals likely as a result of Made in Abyss S2 being the priority, lead to an overall bland product. But with yet another change in directors, this time for way better, I'm more hopeful. |

Can anyone familiar with anime production say whether it's normal for a show to change directors each season? At least the new director for s3 worked on the first season.

In a word ... yes. As bad as S2 was, S3 is still going to do better than 3/4 of the new series that are going to debut. The same goes for One Punch Man S3. Yes, S2 was horrible. Yes, the people who loved S1 will check it out hoping that it will at least be better than S2. Yes, people are going to check it out because they still like the characters, or because they have been keeping up with the source material and still want to see it animated. If S3 is also terrible then you may see a huge dropoff. But S1 earned enough goodwill for people not to give it up. Also, there is bad and there is "Promised Neverland S2" bad. Shield Hero didn't sink to those depths at least. Like OPM, most of the issues with S2 were pacing, pulled punches and questionable editing decisions. Those are fixable. |
