Programming blocks are one of those things that don't get a lot of discussion in Anglosphere anime fandom, with the exception of noitamina. I kinda wish they did (the pre-Conan timeslot's been very important to its shows' success), but I can understand why they don't, in places where anime's initial TV broadcast has no relevance to how it's experienced. And so much TV anime isn't aired in a dedicated anime timeslot at all, or even a specific national network, with the production committee instead putting it on a smattering of independent stations -- Oshi no Ko is the one I remember, airing mostly but not entirely on JAITS stations, with I think one or two VHF stations in the list. In the US we'd call that first-run syndication, but I'm not sure that same terminology is used in Japan.

The programming blocks on things like CartoonNetwork/AdultSwim had a pretty decisive effect for many of us growing up, though.
I wonder if that's still the case, with the profusion of ways to stream media? It seems reasonable to expect that 'programming blocks' matter much, much less for whether and how anime is consumed internationally now than a decade or two ago. It would be really, really cool to see that issue explored systematically and quantitatively.

I guess NTV is banking really hard on Frieren being a hit if they not only have the premiere be two-hours long, but also are airing it as the first anime on a new block.

Well, Madhouse literally belongs to NTV too in the first place, so it's pretty rational.

Yes, it does seem like NTV is placing a lot of confidence in the anime series "Frieren" by giving it a two-hour premiere and airing it as the first anime on a new block. This indicates that they have high expectations for the show's success. It's not uncommon for networks to invest heavily in promoting and showcasing a new series, especially when they have a vested interest in its production.
