Yakuza's marketing sure did shift a lot sometime around 0. The game's localization got a lot more loose, inaccurate, and toned down, and with 7 and the Judgement spin off they pushed the English dub hard so seeing this kind of announcement kind of takes the wind from their sails a bit. I don't plan on listening to the dub myself but I'm guessing they're using this time to re-record things after the backlash and criticism they got from the initial reveal?

Eh plenty of people use the dub though, especially since it is pretty well made.

Yeah the idea of “most” people not using it is pretty weird given how many Japanese games come to the US that don’t get any dubs outside of the original japanese and how that tends to be a stick in some fans craws.

You put in other dubs in these games especially if those dubs are well done people will use them.

Well, as long as it's eventually included.

The only game besides 7 that had a dub was the first one, and everyone always makes fun of that game's dub because of how bad it was. I don't think that's accurate at all. If this was Persona or Fire Emblem or some other series that has had a dub for decades then maybe but Yakuza/Like a Dragon has historically been sub only.

I'm not surprised they will just patch in a dub instead of delay it since I'm sure they expect that many of the most eager customers are those that already played the prior games that had no English dub.

I don't discount the purpose behind including a dub, though. Yakuza has been building up momentum, and an English dub is the kind of thing that a company will do to see if it can push it into broader sales. Like a Dragon was a sensible place to try it since the game itself is a departure from the series in terms of gameplay and a different lead character. If subsequent games are also dubbed, the obvious take away is that Sega liked the results from it.

Judgement and Lost Judgement are also dubbed, and the dubs for them and 7 were widely praised for how good they were. Gaiden and 8 are getting dubs because people played those three with dubs and enjoyed it.

That's a good point, games 2-6, 1 remake, Dead Souls and Ishin did not have a dub. Even the dub for 7 still has some NPCs talk Japanese. I've heard no complaints about 7's dub, but neither have people been amazed by it. We are still at a point where a dub for Yakuza is seen as a bonus than an integral part of the games.

I won't lose any sleep over it so that's fine with me. Still think it was a waste of time for 7.
