Manga Black Magician is finally animated. Just 2 months shy of 26 years of Yugioh animation since he first appeared in the 1998 Opening, it has finally happened. I just wish Kaz could have seen this moment.
On the downside, Konami doing animation now might interfere with my dream of having the manga faithfully adapted (after it had 2 adaptations that butchered it), but its really up to Shueisha, but I know Konami would work hard to prevent it from happening as if two different things catering to different age ranges in different time slots can't co-exist. And I wouldn’t want them to animate it because they'll repeat the same thing that screwed up the 1st 2 adaptations. All these other 90’s or older series getting remakes, specifically the ones that sold less than Yugioh’s manga. |

Nice, a Fallen of Albaz, The World Legacy, Visas Starfrost and the Spell Wars (Endymion vs Spellbook) archetype anime adaptations being a possibility is very nice.

While as a mecha fan, the near extinction of 2D mecha is sad, at least 3D mecha animation has gotten pretty good, as indicated by Zeus. I personally don't see a Yugioh related animation coming soon and think something related to one of Konami's other properties is more likely as their first project. I definitely could be wrong though. That last segment did feel like a Sky Striker teaser.

Is this just a way to consolidate the animation they tend to do for things like Pachinko machines or the like, or is this an attempt at brand control and to avoid brand damage? I don't think Konami saw Castlevania Nocturne and made their studio in direct response to the liberties. Still, it's strikingly similar to Mattel Films being founded because Mattel wanted greater control over their IP adaptations (and considering their first major film release was Barbie, it seems to have worked).

Wasn't Duel Monsters more popular than the manga? I remember reading Takahashi's comments on how he was forced to end the manga since the last arc wasn't very popular with readers since it lacked the card games and he had to rush the ending. |

If by "manga" you're referring to the blue armor and robe with red trim, green skin, and blond hair, that palette didn't actually debut until the 94th chapter of the manga and 2nd card print in the Japanese OCG. Both Toei's anime and the 1st card print use different palettes(and colored rereleases of the manga use the NAS/Duel Monsters anime colors). The 10th Anniversary card art made by Takahashi(Black armor with white hair/trim) is probably closest to his ideal version, and was used in the Dark Side of Dimensions film, which he worked closely on. |

Konami is and remains a hellscape of a company so I would be very worried for the staff. If anyone can make the working conditions in the already miserable field of anime worse then it is Konami. People like James Stephanie Sterling were the first to blow the whistle in the late 00s but nothing improved as of 2023: https://gamerant.com/konami-employee-attacks-boss-arrested/
Why there hell was the mech section visually inspired by Zone of the Enders? I used to be sad that ZoE 3 got canned but going out on a high note was a blessing in the end. One of the few IPs spared from what Silent Hill and even MGS went through. |

Pokemon did their series of short-story animations that took cinematic moments from the games and made small little minutes-long OVA-style movies, I could totally see Yugioh having some successes with that sort of storytelling.
The travesty of Master Duel right now is that if Konami actually put some heavier money and design in, their solo Story mode could actually be some of these scenes they're showing. The World Chalice line of stuff in particular on Master Duel is a blast to play through and I wish they would expand on what Master Duel actually is.... if they're not gonna have Yugi and Yusei anywhere, then show off the cards and get people more interested in the monsters and what they're doing. This is a animation project, it just leaves me wanting more is all. SEVENS is fun slapstick episodes, but it's not the sort of edgy epic that 5Ds was when it was at its best. A show, or a compilation of stories about the monsters themselves actually might be a breath of fresh air after all these years. |

People have been asking for adaptions of the card lore for ages. Stuff like Duel Terminal and Albaz/Abyss have bonkers amount of potential in terms of hitting a separate audience that the more traditional anime works don't or for people who want more story/monster-centric narratives. Dogmatika, Albaz and the Abyss story has a more grandiose and epic adventure tone too, which would make it an amazing seasonal anime.

Imagine an anime where the protagonist is from our world and is isekai'd into a world that functions on playing the card game to survive. There would be characters from all the previous shows there (also isekai'd from their respective shows) that the main character (essentially a stand-in for the viewer) goes on adventures with to help mend the conflicts amongst the different monster factions of that fantasy world while also finding a way home. You'd get to see those legacy characters able to update the card pool of their decks so they can use the newer game mechanics that didn't exist during their respective anime/manga runs. The villains could also be their conspiring with other various monster factions for nefarious reasons.
The big thing is that the English adaptation needs to be 1-to-1 with the Japanese version. No 4Kids-ing the dialog or editing the footage. I imagine putting decent promo cards in the blu-ray releases would certainly sell a lot of disks. I think it would be cool if the ultimate reason for why the main character gets isekai'd into this world is because of the love of the game/manga/anime was so strong that a wish was granted to him for his love and dedication. Another plot aspect could be that his female childhood friend is also sent with him. She has zero interest in Yu-Gi-Oh in the real world so she basically has to start from zero on learning the game and coming into her own as a strong duelist in her own right. It would be neat to see the characters having to make "contracts" with various monsters in order to gain access to the card versions for their decks. Learning actual combat techniques from monster characters in order to use spells like Mystical Space Typhoon or traps like Mirror Force. |
