Well at least they were smart and opened it near Japan town...but that's also close to Fillmore...Well that should be interesting.

Hey, I'm a member of Chaya! Though I haven't been there in a while. 20000 volumes is quite a collection there, and the fact that it's in the Bay will certainly try cater and appeal to those who are interested in the medium out there.

Maybe I'll go check it out since I have that day off work. I have ate at "On the Bridge" many times. They have a great selection of curry and pasta. Most of their manga is stuff that is long out of print and there televisions usually have subs on, so you can follow the shows even if the audio is off. The last time I was there I read the Unchu Senkan Yamato manga while having some really hot curry.

Well, I took a look at it, It's good. not the best location ever in my opinion, but definitely good for novelty's sake. I will warn, the selection is predominantly Japanese, and the food items available are a bit on the limited side as it stands.
As a correction, "On the Bridge" is a restaurant, and primarily not meant to use manga as the draw. |

I was reading an article in one of the free Japanese newspapers (Bayspo?) that said the inventory consists of 22,000 Japanese manga and 800 English. The ratio of English titles is really small, but there is definitely enough to keep one occupied for a number of hours. That being said I ended up going to On the Bridge instead where I read the Eva manga for free while eating XXX curry since I had less than one hour to spend in Japan Town. On a sad note Mika occupies what I believe was part of Mikado. Mikado has consolidated their CD/DVD part of the store into what was the Gundam/Hello Kitty part of the store. |

Mikado just couldn't keep up with that spot really. Not enough buyers. They've actually just consolidated their Mikado Kids and Music into one shop while moving all their "electric" products into a corner of the KIDS. Alas, not many people come to Japantown to buy rice cookers and massage chairs these days, that's why they're downsizing. Mika actually takes over a location that's been empty for a while. It used to be an antique store that went out about 3 years ago. Forgot the name though. |
