I've resigned myself to the idea that they're going to change stuff about Astro Boy to "update" it (and while I think it needs some updating, some of the ideas are kind of dumb; if you need a girl, use his sister Uran!), but I still hold out hope it will be a decent movie, and stay true to the spirit of the original manga, even if it messes around with details. I mean, it can't be worse than Dragonball: Evolution. I don't think that's physically possible.

One hopes that my mental image of a sidekick akin to Scrappy-Doo isn't an accurate idea of what this character will be like in the film. So long as the character designs are befitting of Tezuka's own creations, I'll make no complaint.

Astro Boy is a character that overcomes a lot of tragedy and hardships including loss of humanity. If this gets portrayed decently being a children's title, then I also won't complain.

Well, it's got the advantage of being animated, so you won't have the believability-barrier that Dragonball needed (and failed) to overcome (save for the shirt thing, stop nitpicking, people!). They've kept the character designs close to the original. From the trailers, Astro Boy isn't an angsting teenager, he's still a fun-loving kid. It's already three steps ahead of Dragonball.

Like I said, it isn't going to be 100% accurate to the original manga, but then again, most of the comic books being adapted into movies lately haven't been either, and yet a good chunk of them have been excellent nonetheless. The big question for me will be whether it captures the original spirit, primarily the message of peace and overcoming differences that the original manga had - or whether it get lost in all the action.

...and how annoying the new characters are. Anime hyper

Agreed. I thought nothing could be worse than that Speed Racer movie and then came Dragon Ball: Evolution.

And after reading "scene-stealing robot that's half-dog and half-trashcan" there is a high possibility that this movie may or may not be as horriable as Dragon Ball: Evolution.

But... that movie was amazingly fun. Did you ever watch the television series?
