Am very tempted to get this. I've never watched the live-action Supernatural before but have always been interested in getting into the franchise - the idea of there being 8 or 9 seasons of TV to catchup on is a bit daunting, but this (from what I've read) seems to encompass the first two seasons and using some of the stories from those seasons together with original episodes.

Anyone reckon this would be a fun (and accessible) to watch for a novice of the franchise?

I'd say just watch the actual show at your own pace. Once it gets going it won't feel like a chore getting through the episodes. The anime is a mixed bag to be honest. On the plus side the monsters are better in the way they are portrayed but the dynamic between the leads feels off because they got a fill in to play Dean for the majority of the show. If you really just wanna catch up quickly though i'd go for watching this then starting the real show at season 3.
