Sen To Chihiro items

Disney not the only outlet for Sen to Chihiro in the United States? Will Sen's Box Office record last?

According to this japanese article, Tokuma is currently in negotiation with both Disney and DreamWorks for a possible North American release of Sen to Chihiro. While it had been generally assumed that since Disney partially funded the production of Sen to Chihiro they would have exclusive worldwide rights to release it, it now seems that Disney only had "right of first refusal." Meaning that if Disney turns down Tokuma's asking price for Sen to Chihiro, Tokuma has the right to sell distribution rights to other companies.

The image in the Sponichi article is of Miyazaki, Stephen Alpert (Tokuma International), and the chairman of TOHO, the Japanese distributor of Sen to Chihiro.

There has also been some talk of a possible breaking of Sen to Chihiro's Japanese box office record, which currently stands in excess of 26.6 Billion Yen. Avid anime historians may remember that when Princess Mononoke broke the previous Japanese box office record, then held by E.T., another American film came along only a few months later to claim the box office record for itself; that film being Titanic. While Sen holds the current Japanese Box office record in Japan, and continues to do well in theatres, another American blockbuster, Harry Potter, is regarded as a possible contender for that record. The Harry Potter books are already very popular in Japan and the movie has sold three times as many pre-sale tickets as had Sen to Chihiro.

This week Sen to Chihiro has slipped to the number two position at the box office, "In Between Calmness And Passion" has replaced it at the top.
