Takashi Murakami Named Among Time's 100 Influential

Modern artist created Superflat Monogram, Kaikai & Kiki anime

America's Time news magazine has named Takashi Murakami, the modern artist that popularized the Superflat style of anime-influenced art, to the 2008 Time 100 list of the world's most influential people. Louis Vuitton creative director Marc Jacobs wrote a laudatory piece on Murakami for Time and described how they revamped Louis Vuitton's image with Murakami's signature vibrant colors. Jacobs specifically notes the influence that manga has on Murakami; Murakami himself created anime such as the Superflat Monogram and Kaikai & Kiki videos.

The "© MURAKAMI" exhibition is currently running at the Brooklyn Museum in New York City until July 13. The only other Japanese person on Time's list is Shinya Yamanaka, the co-discoverer of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells that may help treat or prevent disease.
