Japanese Theater Chains to Go All Digital in 2013

posted on by Joseph First

The Japanese movie theater industry's 10 largest companies all have plans to make all of their cinemas digital by the end of next year, according to a Kyodo News survey. TOHO CINEMAS, the largest of these operators, already finished making the conversion this June.

This survey, sent to 277 independent theaters by the Japan Community Cinema Center, also concluded that more than 46% of the 138 that responded said that they had digitized their venues. While costs may be high, averaging US$130,000, many smaller theaters are planning to go digital rather than risking "commercial oblivion."
