a reminder that anime and its fans really aren't progressive most of the time.

Yeah, that's some pretty blatant homophobia.

And that's a crying shame.

People offended because the poster tried to work within Twitter's character limit? Not the worst I've seen, sadly.

Ok, I'm sure there were some. However, the article was pretty clear the main response it got was confusion which makes perfect sense considering you don't really (afaik) see voice actors publicly shipping the characters they play in a crack pairing.

If this incident says anything, it isn't about homophobia. It is about how ridiculously seriously anime fans take shipping that even when a VA pretty clearly wasn't intending it that way, it became an issue.

It doesn't need to be read that way. For one thing, it could be seen as disrespectful to the the writer(s) to "ship" characters that have no canonical reason to be "shipped". Changing someone's work is seen as disrespectful in some circles.

"You're homophobic if you don't want to force two straight people to be gay"

Really now? Is that the go-to defense these days?

We're talking characters here though, not people.

This has nothing to do with "forcing" anyone or their individual sexualities. It's the fact that a mere abbreviation of names in a tweet caused people to absolutely lose their crap. So yes, jumping to wild conclusions and complaining about "onoz teh ghey!" makes one homophobic.

Sort of, what it really shows is fans oversensitiveness with characters. And yes, the knee-jerk reaction would likely be homophobic in some respects. Alas the truth would likely be the same if it was a couple of women or a straight couple. The issue is the implication of a sudden change between characters that implies a relationship (of any context), and fan's mainly reacting to that. Badly.

That said, it doesn't make it less... stupid.

TBH, I didn't read any homophobia from the article, since it wasn't entirely clear what exactly was making people complain. I guess it would seem to me that the people who are mostly likely to know about shipping naming conventions would be the least likely to be homophobic, since I imagine you'd more likely than not be a fan of the BL works community. The way I read the article was that hardcore fans might have just been overly critical of the voice actor's incorrect usage of the wording, and the unintended pairing it was suggesting, not necessarily a reaction to whether a real life relationship was considered inappropriate. Sort of like the reaction you sometimes see from anime fans who get pissy when you call shows like Code Lyoko or Teen Titans "anime". I could be mistaken though, since it's not entirely clear from the article what exactly the fans were complaining about.

It really is about time Twitter got around to extending that infamous 140-character limit. Making photos and quoted Tweet no longer count as part of the word count was a good start, but it still isn't enough.

Where's the laidback, expresionless, open minded being when you needed one? (Not implying that the people conplaining about this on twitter on anyone here being the reverse of what I mentioned, mind you). Oh yeah, they remained quiet and seldom.

On the serious side, I don't know what's the complaints is really about so I'm gonna move to the next interest.
