Whatever the movie decides to do, I'm just hoping they keep the political babbling to a minimum. That was always the worst part of Stand Alone Complex and the movies.

Threads about this specific movie adaptation are a real treat.
You can pinpoint down with absolute accuray what "offended" people are going to say.
I just hope they came up with a good script and the producers don't try to do a Marvel end don't end type of crass movie.

Gotta admit I'm extremely tired of the "gritty realism" trend... it was cool when it started, but it's kind of a tired cliché for me these days, specially in action movies.
But if the movie can bring some of the dreaded existentialism that was always part of the original, then it'll ring true to me.
Above discussions about race, overall looks, political content and whatnot, if we get to the core of what Ghost in the Shell is (and this will vary from person to person), for me I guess it's existentialism and the idea of self in a future where the realm of ideas as thoughts are even less connected to physical flesh and bones creating some sort of disparity and confusion in a good part of the cast.
So, hoping for a more original story than a fast rehash of anime/manga content.

Quoting Stand Alone Complex sets out their stall pretty firmly. It's, I suppose, the safer choice, but to be honest, I reckon one more likely to work reasonably well. What encourages me is SJ talked about the Major's character journey as a/the main driving factor for the plot. That would immediately raise it above standard slam bang Hollywood stuff.
I don't mind the gritty realism thing provided it works as part of the plot. The film might succeed: am prepared to treat it with an open mind. Mind, I'm not die-hard Ghost in the Shell fan: I really like a good amount of Oshii's films and the first two Stand Alone series, but it's not a sacred series that must not be messed with (to me, at least). But if Hollywood announced a film version of Mawaru Penguindrum I might start getting twitchy, so I have sympathy for more committed fans!

We don't know what they mean. If they're using StandAlone Complex as the model, then yes, SAC is pretty grounded in 'realness' compared to the Oshii films.
By that I mean that it's more of a cop show dealing more with real world scenarios with philosophical underpinnings whereas Oshii puts the philosophy more front and center.
StandAlone Complex also has more emphasis and presentation on the situation 'on the ground' as a cop/crime show.

Meh, I'll try to see it in theaters, it doesn't sound too awful. Plus,(as has been shown repeatedly over the past decade), as long as it makes enough money they'll keep making more. How well this movie does at the box office will likely affect the marketing budget the Cameron-produced Battle Angel Alita / Gunnm sees, as well as any future adaptations from anime or manga.

I agree that Stand Alone Complex already has what I would consider "gritty realism"--it takes place in a very imperfect future, full of terrorists, brain diseases, crime, war, etc. How are they going to add more "gritty realism" to what its already got?
Also, will it have Togusa? Will watch for Togusa!

Well, I assume she's talking about the Sin City movies specifically, which hewed closely to the style, visuals, and stories of the original Frank Miller comics.

Considering the success of Titanic & Avatar, I think Cameron could go to a studio and say he plans to shoot a 3 hr movie of a guy sitting on a toilet and they'd give him money for it. I don't think anything other than Cameron's interest/lack thereof will affect his Alita movie.
