It probably won't be weekly, but it will surely be simultaneous everwhere.

So do we need to watch/read anything before this?

I don't believe so if I remember correctly. Just these 5 deadly assassins all come to Japan to defeat and kill Baki. All of Baki's friends and allies are people he fought and defeated in this big underground martial arts tournament. Fairly Shounen writing troupes but very Seinen action scenes. Very brutal and bloody fights.

Happiest news of the day!! With 26 episodes they could adapt all of the prisoners arc, and I think it is important to watch, or at least read something about the last 2 seasons, because it will be a direct sequel.

Yeah, barring a few things, that's more or less all you need to know. If you've never seen/read Baki before and you want the full back story, you can just watch the TV series and that'll pretty much get you up to speed.

Overall the entire franchise plot and story is incredibly simple. Baki wants to defeat his father Yujiro Hanma aka the Ogre the most powerful fighter in the world. That is literally the entire plot of the franchise. Baki fights people in order to get stronger to defeat his father. The main drive of the series is the awesome fights and some really cool art especially during this arc.

I really enjoyed the Baki anime, both the first short OVA and the 2 seasons TV series. I hope that this one picks up after the last series. I don't think that we need a reboot, and of course bringing back Masami Kikuchi for the role would be a very much welcomed thing Smile

Then I have good news, it's not going to be a reboot and it'll pick up after the last series.

It seems Netflix is deciding to jump on the anime licensing bandwagon again upon Sony Pictures TV buying out most of Funi. Seriously, when it comes to American media giants getting into such a business decision (licensing streams or home video), I think the House of Mouse is the only company that has done it right.
