Google "Kojicast" and the first 4 pages (maybe more, I just stopped at 4) are almost all "Kojicast sues X" "Kojicast V. Y". Nothing about their company or what THEY do with the technology.

So their business model basically seems to just be "Own a bunch of vague-enough patents and try to win jackpot settlements from crack lawsuits".

F*** em.

A bottom-feeding patent troll trying to get lucky. The fact that they filed the suit in eastern district of Texas, the favorite place to file for patent trolls, pretty much confirms it. Hopefully the case will be dismissed.

United Patents filed their petition against Kojicast this past Friday, scroll down to PTAB cases. PTAB stands for "Patent Trial and Appeal Board" so I guess their contest must have found something worthwhile.

So it’s just like that goddamn Personal Audio LLC nonsense of filing lawsuits against everybody? What a sorry excuse for human beings.

Textbook example of a patent troll. While I'm sure Funimation and their new parent company will handle it fine, this is evidence that the US needs to amend its patent laws. Other countries don't have this problem. Small businesses can get ruined by things like this.

Normally I'd agree with you; however, it looks like Funimation's headquarters are in the Eastern district.

That I agree with. Smile

Oh wow I remember the Last Week Tonight episode about this.
This definitely reeks of a patent troll.

Pretty sure Youtube Red does the same, but I guess they're too big for Kojicast to "uphold their patent" against...

Does it with the normal Youtube app too. That being said, they tried Daily Motion first and failed, and I guess they don't realise who is backing Funimation, so they seem to be gluttons for punishment in the first place

I remember when this first came up all the Youtubers and bloggers banking on the Vic scandal put FUNIMATION SUED in big letters in the title and then sheepishly mention at the end ‘oh yeah, they might be patent troll’.

Guess bottom feeding grifters gotta stick together

Looks like they're trying to sue people until someone settles to avoid the hassle, since they've already had two suits dismissed.

Pretty much any streaming service I've subscribed to has this feature. YouTubeTV and Playstation Vue both have it. So does Crunchyroll and, I think, Netflix and Amazon. The problem is "prior art." Most all these services came after 2012 when the patent was assigned.

For those unaware, an patent/trademark/copyright trolls is IP rights holder who doesn't attempt to make or license out that IP. Instead, their money is really made by going after the people suspected of infringing that IP.

If an argument could be made for stronger American laws for IP termination (meaning they go to the American public domain more quickly or become generic trademarks), IP trolling would be one of those arguments.

That the case will be heard in the eastern district of Texas might be an issue since the whole reason that companies fought so hard to change where patent cases can be sent is because that was the most favorable location in the entire country for patent trolls. That court district will rarely dismiss even the most fishy of patent lawsuits and when in court it was a gamble what would happen. The bigger issue is that software patents can be overly broad in scope and they are too easily granted.
