I'd say I'm excited but... they haven't released anything but the title so there's nothing to be excited for aside from "new TV Gundam"

From the title, I would hope that we FINALLY get a main female pilot, but I'm sure that's not the case.

Same as MagicPolly and Punch Drunk Marc.
We know nothing yet... x'D (and man, I'll be so ready for a main female pilot...)

Let's hope this new Gundam surprise us (in a good way).

At least they seem to think it's a show worthy enough to bring back the nichigo timeslot they (TBS/MBS) ended years ago. animenewsnetwork.com/news/2016-12-20/mbs-tbs-end-nichigo-anime-timeslot-launch-saturday-morning-anime-hour-in-april/.110139

The series will be the first television anime series in the franchise since Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans.

So we just ignoring Build Divers and Re:Rise now? Because those were still Gundam TV shows.

To be fair, AGE wasn't as child-friendly as it looked. Though it did have a lot of different problems.

There are two demographics here.
1. 8-14 year old boys in Japan.
2. (Progressive) western anime fans.

Which of these 2 groups are much bigger than the other?
Which of these 2 groups buys a lot more Gundam toys?
Which of these 2 groups actually wants a female Gundam lead?

So ...

Which of these 2 groups should the Gundam producers be more responsive to?

Don't get me wrong: there are a lot of shonen concepts where a female lead or even a mostly female cast would be very successful. (There are those who believe that "Sarada" would be much less of a disaster than is "Boruto" and I am among them.) But a toy merchandise driven one that relies heavily on a young target market's identification with and aspirations to be the protagonist is the worst candidate.

Change the target market to girls then?

A. Why do that with your long-running massive cash cow franchise? It would be much better to bring CLAMP back and create a female-targeted mecha franchise.

B. Anyone who saw the quite disappointing box office and merchandising results from when Transformers tried this with Bumblebee has to question whether it will actually work The script, acting and direction were critically acclaimed, but not very many females or males watched the movie and even fewer bought the toys. Bumblebee was supposed to kickstart a new Transformers franchise, but it sent Hasbro and Paramount back to the drawing board.

So is this an AU, or within UC timeline?

Up for either, but damn I would kill for another UC tv series instead of an OVA/movie that gets dropped once every few years.

I can't imagine this being UC. Prime time timeslot definitely makes it seem like they're trying to draw in a new audience, and doing a story in a timeline with a lot of baggage isn't a great way to do that. Probably one of the reasons they haven't done a new, made for tv UC series since... the late 80s? Was Victory 90s?

The "Build" shows are treated as their own kind of spinoff series, rather than "mainline" titles, yes. Arbitrary, maybe, but it makes sense since those shows don't have actual robots, just digital/plastic facsimiles.

Seeing Star Driver brought back nostalgia. So it will be airing at the 5pm time slot. I call that the "executive meddling" time slot. The funny thing is that the video started with Code Geass R2, a sequel that had its development and plot altered due to executive meddling in order to bring in the casuals (money) after CG was a late night anime. They had to call it R2, which means Route 2, because it deviates from the original plot that they had already made (episode 26 was already done) before the meddling. I would have hoped for this Gundam to air a bit later, but I know what current Sunrise is like.

With all due respect, it is perplexing that you've come this far and don't know the difference between a MAIN Gundam series (All of TV UC, G Gundam, Wing, Seed, etc.) and a SPIN-OFF Gundam series (SD, Build, etc.). Not only was this addressed in the announcement article and comment section months ago, this article still explained it by pointing out IBO as the last Gundam, and you still went ahead and said what you said because you couldn't figure it out. You are the issue here. Not the article.

Edit:

Here's an update:

I went back to the original announcement article comment section and look who I found:

I wouldn't bet on a female lead, just another "mysterious girl that changes the protagonist's life forever" type of situation.

Anyways, Build Divers should be counted, but if they just mean it in the sense that this will be a proper war story instead of model kit fighting that's fair to say.

Safe to say Vaisaga is intentionally doing this and has no plans to stop.

I wouldn't be surprised if they go this route again, but it'd be great if they could avoid the 25/25 episode split featuring a time jump in between each half. I felt that both 00 and IBO were quite a bit worse in their second halves
