a half-vampire called a dhampir (though in the English dub, they all call it dunpeal, which I've never understood)

Probably some misromanization of dhampir -> ダンピール -> danpiiru -> dunpeal.

I missed out on the initial release of Vampire Hunter D and Bloodlust, only watching them for the first time within the last couple of years. But while the original was quite cheesy and "80s," I can certainly respect the dark atmosphere, detailed landscapes, and undeniable coolness of Bloodlust. If nothing else, it definitely deserves its place as one of the foundational "gateway anime" of the Blockbuster/VHS era of fandom.

I liked it when it first came out and I like it now-what else do I need to say?
