Did...did anyone ask for this? Ever? I still haven't recovered the brain cells I lost watching that trainwreck.

I'm one of the few who liked GXP and even I know this won't be as good.

Wow, this is unexpected.
I guess since main Tenchi wrapped up with those OVA's, this is the logical next step if they wanted to do more.

I assume this is going to adapt an arc from those canon novels? Does anyone familiar with them have any input?

Not in a million years. GXP is one of the few shows that Jason DeMarco has outright said he regrets having on the block. They picked it up thinking it'd be like the original Tenchi shows, but as soon as they realized what they actually got, it was flung from 12:30 to 3am.

I love Tenchi, but those new OVAs (and I presume this too) just require too much on having read all the Japan only GXP novels (and other similar sources too I think...) to be able to enjoy them =/

A lot of people don't know this but Masaki Kajishima did not like how the original GXP story and went and decided to remake it as novel series, the basic story is still the same up until the end of that anime story but the overall story arcs in that one had several revisions including different characters and plots that somewhat changed the story and the novels also continue past that point.

This one based on the images will follow after the GXP anime in a sense but will have those very same different elements that comes from the book series which is still going to confuse a lot of anime only in the western audience.

This is exactly why the 4th and 5th ova series are not as liked by western audience as there are to many gaps from what we have left off and it adapted all the characters and developments from the GXP book series and not the anime original GXP version.

I will never understand why they keep doing this, it confuses a lot of people to jump around, especially since the western audience never got the books to read the remake vers of the story.

I guess this prequel to Paradise war is being made cause Kajishama also announced that they are working on the actual Paradise War adaptation too all the way back in his doujinshin back at Comiket 100 and this will lead to that, Paradise war is more stand alone like Geminar so you don't need to know much Tenchi canon. So this is like Ryo-oki ova 4 and 5 it will bridge the gap in between.

ANN you might want to add this as seperate article or part of this in the news section:https://anime.astronerdboy.com/2022/08/tenchi-muyo-gxp-paradise-war-announced.html

The title of his fanwork is Omatsuri Zenjitsu no Yoru Ganso Ban 22.08 you can find the original jp text for confirmation. Take care.

As I recall the light novels still well in Japan which is probably why this is getting made and also it's the 30th anniversary of the original series. The newer OVAs jumped around a lot in the timeline so I assume there's plenty of unadapted material left to cover. The most interesting part of this news is it doesn't look like AIC is involved after Toei bought AIC awhile ago. Also what happened to that Pretty Sammy sequel AIC announced a couple of years back? I also wonder if Crunchyroll will renew their streaming rights to the original GXP as Funimation's expired several years back but the DVD is still available.

I actually thought GXP was decent, and really what the main OVA should've done with Tenchi and the gang (moved them to space), but let's face it, this franchise is long dead. Nobody even talks about it anymore. Kajishima killed it the moment that horrendous third OVA hit. Chibi Tokimi my ass.

The Pretty Sammy Sequal crowdfunding campaign only managed 12% which is abysmal so most likely it was quietly scrapped.

This is the issue a lot of fans have with this franchise is it jumps around all over the place. so it is hard to follow and since the stuff past GXP(which itself was redone in the books) has been retconned to follow the overall GXP reedition of the universe and with the books themselves have not finished its storyline, but we got several stories that are aftermath of it even this one.
You can understand why the fanbase has become so alienated from it especially the western audience since we don't even have a translation of the Books to follow this stuff that came after, they really need to either release those or do a full GXP Remake.

They should of aired War on Geminar instead, most of the tenchi fandom agree that it has been the best Tenchi new release past the 90's and it helps it is more standalone and follows and action/harem/traditional approach to the 90's series.

According to kajishama it was originally intended to air on TV, but AIC for some reason that even he does not know, it was made into an OVA release, the 45 min eps can just be split into two sections as each ep is divided into 2 sections mostly anyway. like the night before the carnival ova which is ep 7 of the original ryo-ohki ova was split into two back when it was airing in toonami.

So, I guess the first Season was somewhat successful? Why else would they wanna make a sequel?

I did not expect this. GXP was ok to me. I only cared about main Tenchi, but even then main Tenchi doesn't hit the same way no more in comparison with the 1st OVA's. I'll watch it, but my expectations are in check.

You were making a good post until you suddenly forgot that they do not make anime or any material with non-Japanese audiences in mind. Stating the bold does not make any sense from the mindset of Japanese person in relation to Tenchi.
