Square Enix constantly shooting itself in the foot has been very entertaining.

Wish they would focus on getting the DQ3 remake done and published before goofing around with these grifter empire toys.

Is this actually a profitable sector? The NFT market has collapsed on itself and even cryptocurrency is in a massive recession.

Probably not, but Square wants to try everything possible to make more money.

Does that include Japan? Japan never joined the bandwagon hate on crypto or NFTs. Some big sites like Skeb use crypto and stuff to commission artists and a lot of big mangaka and anime studios sell NFTs. Either way, those NFT figures of the FF7 characters are easily the best figures they've ever gotten. Much better than the usual Playarts Kai stuff. So more like those, please.

NFTs rarely sell well in Japan (It's usually NFTs from the big legacy or large franchises that sell) and crypto for commissions is to avoid censorship from Mastercard for example, which is not bad at all unlike NFTs.

No, but changing course at this point would mean admitting that the idea was dumb in the first place. Upper management would rather waste money (and hope it pays off anyway) than admit they made a mistake.

Except this won't cost them much of anything given they recently had some of the most successful financial year in the company's history. If anything this won't be serious venture from them and it will simply be written off as loss if fails. So whose foot being shot here? Some people need to can the dramatics on how the company is constantly doomed despite it not panning it out in reality.

Here's to Square Enix's blockchain investments working out as well for them in 2023 as their live service strategy did last year. *offers a one-fingered salute to Babylon's Fall, FFVII: The First Soldier & Chocobo GP*

It's just Matsuda engaging in the sunk-cost fallacy. The reality of the matter is Japan was late to NFTs and got into just when the market crashed. I expect a couple years of nonsense before they all move on.

Actually their live-service games have been some of their biggest source of profits. In fact GaaS in general doing far better than traditional game consoles in Japan. Cherrypicking some duds doesn't change that since some failures are common in that space. Some examples of their successful GaaS games off the top of my head: FFXIV, War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exivus, Octopath Traveler, Champions of the Continent, Re:SaGa Universe and Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia.

Here is actual fiscal report data:
https://www.hd.square-enix.com/eng/ir/library/pdf/ar_2022en.pdf

Basically too many people here throwing around weird claims without anything to back that up either out of bias against moblie gaming or the company itself.

Its just something to make shareholders happy before its quietly abandoned.

I was bang on about this one in the previous chat about Square Enix. Saw this one coming from a mile away. Probably the most shameless Japanese video game developer.

Except other gaming companies are getting in NFTs (Sega, Unisoft etc) so its the whole industry not one lone group.
