ANN verified the episode was inaccessible. It appears it is back up as of 8:21 pm with the same subtitles.

Watchers in Southeast Asia are eating good with this show, the first episode streaming on Ani-One Asia's channel on YouTube has proper subs. It's region-locked for anyone else though. Well, if you don't have a VPN that is...

Edit; To give an example, the Falcon subs in the last pic, here are AOA's;

Oh, that's hilarious.

I really wonder what happened here. I'd like to think CR are better than using machine translations but it really does read as a DeepL translation. I'm wondering if it came directly from Japan, since I wouldn't put it past a Japanese licensor to stick something through DeepL and call it a day, and I know for some series they are provided subs that they have to use even if they kinda suck. But still, this is awful, and the fact Ani-One has good subs seems to ruin the licensor possibility... I hope CR makes some sort of statement on it, even if it's just to blatantly cover their asses.

They aren't. Let's not forget that of the two companies, Funimation paid their sub team higher, but Crunchyroll's were the ones kept on-staff (and at the same payrate) after the merger. Every company is looking to expand into automated services right now to avoid paying their employees, and Sony is absolutely among them. This wouldn't even be the first example of a Japanese company pushing machine translation on western audiences, manga companies have been toying with the idea for years.

There are discussions on reddit that the subs were provided by the publisher Avex, and that CR was contractually obliged to use them, anyone know more?

I only hear speculations, but it's strange that only Crunchy's English sub for this anime gpt affected, Paradox Live's sub which also from Avex is fine, other language subs for Yuzuki are fine, and there's Ani-One's english sub also doesn't have the same problem.

Been waiting for this to happen all week, given the amount of anime this season it seemed ripe for crunchyroll to roll out their ai translators.

guess paying their translators ten cents and a ham sandwich per episode was breaking the bank a bit too much huh

Sounds like an awful deal, imagine owning a machine translated manga volume, I'd want a total recall/refund

So lately they haven't been doing as many dubs, especially this season, and now they can't even get subs right? Lol

Well, theoretically they paid for that translation, so they might as well use it.

If Sony/Funimation/Crunchyroll is going to use machine translation, especially expanding the use going forward, I think I foresee the return of fansubs. Black markets are created when open markets can't or won't serve their customers.

This is actually a surprise to me as the subs have to be extremely poor in order to have people universally complain about them to this extent. Usually, if anything, pointing out sub mistakes just has other people say deal with it.

That said, it looks like they didn't actually fix them anyway. Sorry CR, but machine TL isn't where you want it to be yet.
