This is the longest console generation ever, which is unfortunate since it's also easily the worst (in my opinion). Though all the problems with it (DLC, dumbing down titles for mainstream console players, focusing entirely on people who don't play video games ie the casual crowd, overabundance of shooters, fewer games being released outside Japan, achievement whoring, etc) more than likely wont be fixed with a new console... they'd probably get worse, to be honest.

That's odd, I swear MORE games were being released outside of Japan.

Also, personally this generation is the same as the last one in quality for me.

You mean the multi-media generation? It only gets worse from here.

Good thing to hear that we will still get packaged games, digital-only games should be reserved from smaller- and casual games.

Heard about this on various game sites like Kotaku and IGN. Glad they aren't making PS4, we really don't need a new PS console now (the PS Vita is good enough in it's own way). The PS3 has a good life and I think a PS4 is not needed until 2014 or 2015.

There's not point in trying to predict it. PS4 will happen 2016 if they stick to their 10yr plan.

I didn't predict anything. I took the Sony 10year plan for PS3 and did the math.

I can't understand how people can even think about digital games on PS3. Small PSN digital games? sure! A big complete PS3 game with a file size of 50GB? You must be kidding me. Even if most people had super fast internet connections (and they don't) it would still take days to download that much.

The last full game I bought via the PSN started before I went to sleep and was finished when I woke up so not a big deal. In general I try my best not to buy any physical media be it video games, movies, TV, books or comics. Physical media is just too much of a pain to store and even worse it is a massive pain to move with.

Nearly all PS3 games are around 2-5 GB. The largest one I know it 19 (Gran Turismo 5). The discs can hold a max of 50GB, but no game has THAT much content in it.

I wonder about the rumours of Xbox unveiling its new system? 360 DID get to be the more popular console of the two because it was out a full two years before PS3. Now, I hear people say that deciding between the two consoles, they would buy a 360 over a PS3 because their friends are on it. Having that 2 year extra time, established the fanbase. Sure, some people went over to PS3 after, but not everyone.

According to Wikipedia PS3 and XBox 360 numbers are quite close with the XBox having the slight edge (57.6 vs 56 million). The thing is the PS2 was still selling in good numbers for quite a while so really Sony was not missing out delaying the PS3.

As consoles become more complex and powerful, the time it takes to develop a game for it becomes longer and longer, and thus its generation life also has to be extended to give game publishers more time to develop and then sell their games and recoup their development costs. (Not to mention the console-makers also have to recoup their costs in developing the consoles.)

For instance, if it now takes 2 years to develop a game, then if a console lasts only 5 years, then the developer only has time to develop and sell 2-3 games for it before investing resources again into switching for the next-gen console.

Moreover, except for Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft are aiming their consoles beyond games and into all-around entertainment hubs. So that development further complicate things. So console generation life will only get longer and longer....

The advantage of establishing a big console base early is that, after people already bought the console, all they'd be doing is buying games from then on - thus the earlier the makers could recoup their development costs (consoles are sold at a loss; recoup using game license fees). The earlier the base, the more time left for them to just keep buying games, before the next generation's consoles. That's why on average, the 360 still has a good games-to-consoles ratio lead, because it wasn't till around 2010 (5th year into its life) that PS3 console sales started catching up.
