It would have a little bit of everything those girls would like, from Cinderella to Footloose... to Die Hard.

And now I absolutely must watch this.

Downloading as we speak. I'm going to take Justin's advice and consume with alcohol.

And he's also mad at his sister too, for some reason I can't really make out.

I think it's implied that that Mayor and the sister are sleeping together? At least that is what my friend and I got out of it.

This is an amazing piece of work, in the sense that it is so absurd and insane.

Talking about works like this you must watch Blue Flame! It is very, very, special.

I have to admit I totally just burst out laughing after reading your description of this. Laughing

It sounds totally stupid and ridiculous in a hilariously bad kind of way and I'm sort of surprised something like that could get made, but that's anime for you. I'm kind of tempted to check this out now, just to see if it's as weird as described here...

That sounded absolutely glorious. I gotta watch it if I get the chance. I also like how you added "nonsense" to the list of genres. Nice touch. Laughing

Wow. "Nonsense" is a genre? There are so many member elements that must be reclassified....

I'm currently only a few episodes into Fancy Lala, and this article had a weird, surreal feeling for me until it was mentioned at the end.

Seen this one too, just a bewildering little OVA, one of hundreds from that era. I wonder if you'll ever watch unsubbed things that don't necessarily require full understanding, like Okubyou na Venus, which is pure 80s in the form of a music anthology. I love finding stuff like that.

OK, I guess I have to watch Harbor Light Story.

Also, Streets of Fire. I've wanted to watch that for a while now. Can anyone tell me if the pay-to-view YouTube upload of the movie has the source used for the HD DVD or for the DVD? It says HD on the search results but the actual page just says 480p. I don't mind paying $3 to watch a complete mess but I want to make sure I'm watching a good master of it.

I liked Streets of Fire. It's weird, but the 80s punk and 50s visual styles mesh together to create a unique aesthetic. It's almost like something you'd see in anime, so I definitely recommend people looking for future-retro to check it out.

Things to Do:

1) Download the fansub of Harbor Light Story

2) Drink copious amounts of caffeine (since I don't drink alcohol)

3) View with best friend and what his WTF meter go off the charts.

Very Happy Sounds like an entertaining way to kill an hour of time.

Well, I got what this article promised, but I got it after half the OVA's worth of honest, heartfelt and endearing storytelling and characterisation. The sequence where Miho walks home at the end of the day with her dog and sees a father and son catching fish was really subtle and sweet - there's a lot in that short sequence.

Really, half the OVA is a good example of 80s anime storytelling and the other half is inspired insanity you only get in anime OVAs. Really, it's the best of both worlds: like a glorious mashup between Garzey's Wing and Creamy Mami. Except it was never even bad (okay, the animation direction tanks during the last third), just incredibly silly. Thank you for directing me to this, Justin.

I just watched it and it was possibly the most awesome piece of crap I've seen. I think it was about a little girl on acid. At least, that's the only way I can explain why her tears turn into butterflies, then a book starts talking to her and transforms her into a fifteen year-old while it teleports her to the concert hall!

Dammit, I need to stop reading this column, it gets me interested in watching clearly bad ideas. And brand, you're not helping me! I've instantly added two terrible 80s OVAs to my ptw! And I bought Eiken yesterday! So I guess that means one could be forgiven for thinking I just like garbage...also, someone mentioned "California Crisis" the other day, so yeah, that one too.
