Not playing in Chicago?! But I saw all the Madoka movies and Blue Exorcist there. And they were PACKED! It's a more populated city than a lot of the ones listed here . . . Confused

Last week, it was Madoka Magica 3 in my region. In January, they said it will be Evangelion 3. Guess for February, it's AnoHana ♥

Apparently, in Aniplex's eyes, Tennessee isn't even considered a state.

Pssh. Wasn't that interested in this movie anyway. Rolling Eyes

Shame this didn't go to NIS of America. NISA was the only one that cared enough to give us the TV series and now Ill never be able to see the movie because Aniplex doesn't recognize the Midwest and overprices their movies.

Aww, the Boston showing is on the 18th when I'll be at work. A shame, I kind of enjoy watching anime in the theater lately.

Interesting little boom in anime getting US theatrical showings all of a sudden, between Wolf Children, Madoka Magica, Evangelion 3.0, and now Anohana.

I hope it keeps up… seems like Fathom made a run at these a few years back and then it shriveled up. I'd just moved from a big city (Atlanta) to a small one (Grand Rapids) around the time the Eureka Seven movie came out, and my new local theater hasn't shown anime since, so I don't know if that was a bust here or if Phantom bailed on anime everywhere or what. Of course, Answerman had a column about the theatrical screenings a few weeks ago.

Well, that's not exactly fair, is it? First, this is more on the distributor (Eleven Arts, probably?) than Aniplex. No idea why Anohana isn't in, say, Chicago (where the Music Box happily sold out Madoka Magica on multiple occasions), and yet it's in two theaters in suburban Detroit that are within 10 miles of each other. Theatrical anime is haphazard and in flux right now, and we should probably be happy with what we get at all.

As for "overpriced", well, welcome to being in a niche audience. I paid $15 for Madoka Magica: Rebellion, which only $5 more than I paid for Frozen the week before. If they need to charge more to bring in anime, that's fine with me. In fact, the theater where I saw it was 120 miles away, so between gas and getting a hotel room for the night (the 7:30 sold out, so I had to see the 10PM, and didn't want to risk driving through the snow overnight), I blew $100 seeing Madoka in the theater.

Worth it? Actually, yeah. It was fun to be with an amped-up crowd, and it felt special. And management at The Maple Theater was very happy to sell so many seats, and enthusiastically announced they'd be getting Evangelion next month.

^He means their DVD/BR are overpriced not their theater tickets.

And yeah Aniplex USA film distribution makes no sense to me. They don't show the film in certain large populated cities and the cities they choose seem completely random.
