James Wan is the perfect fit for Macross as him and the source material are the definition of style over substance (with the scripts for Plus being the sole exception).
He is also allowed to play with big money which this one will need. Will this Rube Goldberg machine of a movie work out? Beats me and they want to turn this into a cinematic universe too but this first film is the one current anime adaptation by Hollywood that has even a chance to work out so let´s see what happens. Macross Delta is comming too. Go Aquaman btw! The 90s comics and the current ones are great.

I still see the Jankyness of Harmony Gold's license an issue, Studio Nue isn't on speaking terms and if they try to take this outside North America then they risk losing vs the creators.

Which in my mind would be a good thing since it would let us macross fans get legit versions of Zero, 7, and F.

"Raped" is far to strong a word, for casual insults. But "Harmony Gold has TROLLED my Adulthood" does work. Since for the better part of the last 10 years they've been little more than copyright trolls.

Well, it'll be a Robotech movie, not Macross, in that they won't be able to use any of the names, designs, or concepts from Macross. It could turn out fine, maybe, but the connection between whatever this will be and the 1982 anime just won't exist.

I hope.

(I guess they can still use Mospeada designs, but honestly no one gives a shit about Mospeada. Don't deny it.)

You say that, and yet I'd dare say that that series (at least, how Robotech handled it) was the best part of the frankensteined creation Robotech was.

I can perfectly understand why there is so much vitriol towards Harmony Gold. They've been effectively screwing over things for a good while now, even on the Robotech front. But what I will never understand is this mindset that what Robotech is is absolutely not enjoyable. I got the sets. I watched them. I have absolutely no familiarity with the original shows that were used to make Robotech, nor do I have any memories of watching Robotech before buying the sets (the show's airing is before my time). But you know what? For the most part, I still enjoyed Robotech for what it was - a product of it's time.

So yeah, all these blanket statements of 'How could ANYONE ever enjoy this abomination?!' that always seem to get tossed about whenever related news comes up? They're pretty needless, because apparently there are still people that enjoy the Robotech series.

(For clarification though, I do think we need proper releases of the series' used to make Robotech in their original versions, for people that do want to see them - and I myself would be fairly interested in seeing them - and for posterity's sake as well; I just don't agree with this outlook that Robotech has 'ruined' anything just by it's mere existence.)

They can sign whomever they want to, but it's still not going to happen. They need Chinese box office money to, at minimum, break even. And they still don't have the Asian rights to Macross.

Please remember there is a difference between macross and robotech.
Robotech is the bastard child of a great series.

Presumably they would use the existing mecha designs, would they not? HG does seem to have some kind of legal hold on the designs (in the states, at least), however questionable their acquisition of such rights was.

I guess it really depends on which arc they're planning to adapt, unless this is an original story (a la Shadow Chronicles) or a full-on rebooted origin story in which case you're probably right in that they would likely avoid anything that would cause legal trouble worldwide.

This is good news for Robotech fans.

Who knows how Sony is going to adapt Robotech. I think Sony would be able to resolve any difficulties if they wanted to go for a full adaptation. Personally, I have no problems forgoing the official mecha, but I would really hope they can keep the characters from Robotech.

For a franchise that abandoned its last Kickstarter without even reaching the 40% mark, Sony's dedication to Robotech is really something.

Here is the link for Robotech The Classic Collection on amazon:
animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-07-27/harmony-gold-to-release-robotech-super-dimension-fortress-macross-dvd-set/.77032

It has Robotech and SUPER DIMENSION FORTRESS MACROSS, the original japanese series, but you need to be aware of the recordable DVD-R thing.
Now you could see the original Japanese series, at least the first one.

I have seen both the Robotech series and at least Macross, but it is true that the Japanese version is superior. Everything is not drawn out and extended unnecessarily.

This movie has been in development hell for 7 years at least. Hopefully Sony would attempt it with a whole hearted effort. I have not seen the recent live action movies for anime and games personally, but I know that the fan base was devastated. However, these help in the long run because the movie makers can hopefully improve their live action adaptations for anime and games. Laughing

I am indifferent to this. In my opinion there is no bad Science fiction, I am just glad to see that it is getting made and the IP's not sitting going to waste.
I would prefer it to be an actual Anime though. Lol.
But I geuss we'll see what happens and hope for the best. Laughing
