Didn't we just read a Tales from the Industry column about why it's poor business practice for companies to make announcements that aren't yet official? Levy gonna Levy I suppose.

*Shakes fist at the sky* "Tokyopop!"

At this point all my feelings about them can be summed up with >____> and or this -____-.

I guess it nice they are publishing again but they have screwed around so much in their history I'll never trust them again.

Disney and Yen Press have a nice thing goin' on together though. I guess Yen isn't interested on making new manga themselves though.

Somehow I don't see how this probable manga collaboration with Disney is going to end so well, given Tokyopop's not-so-great record of managing other projects...

Email from Disney to Tokyopop: "This causes a very difficult situation for us."

Don't see this ending too well, either, considering TP's history and current situation. Also, if Disney wants to license their properties out, might as well go through Yen Press.

Also might not be great (for TP) if they didn't have permission from Disney to share any details this early.

I can see why TP is going this route, though, if they actually have burned bridges with Japanese publishers.

While I admit to reading most of my manga through scanlation sites, I do miss the times I would go to a local library and check out a lot of TP titles. I prefer TP to go back to licensing traditional Japanese manga titles.

Tokyopop collaborated with Disney already a while back to make the kilala princess manga. which featured the protagonist kilala going through the worlds of the first six Disney princesses to learn how to save her best friend from an evil organization and become a princess herself in the process. this collaboration might be a kilala princess sequel featuring the newer disney princesses. the managa was good and cute, TP probably just wanted to refresh their connection to disney.

Actually, no, it's really not. Basically no-one who's ever done anything with or for Tokyopop is happy with the outcome.

And even if we weren't completely leery of anything Tokypop does at this point, what about these announcements is even appealing? It just sounds like more stupidity from Stu. Who on earth was looking for a manga company to sell games for their cell phone? Plenty of other folks already doing that and doing it better. What we want from a manga publisher is manga. And while some folks would probably be interested in manga related to Disney properties, I'd expect that most folks are just looking for more of the existing Japanese stuff to get released in the US. I guess that if you're a Bizenghast fan, then this is good news, but many of us never paid any attention to the stuff that Tokypop did that didn't come from Japan. But as far as I can tell, that bit of news is the only thing in there that even risks being exciting.

But hey, it's fine with me if Tokypop does a bunch of stupid stuff. It makes it that much more likely that they'll fail and finally disappear for good. They did have a good impact on the industry at one point in time, but they've fully burned their bridges at this point, and nothing here makes it sound like any of us should be rebuilding them.
