I know right... It's such a great movie imo. Now if they'd offer a DVD I'd be happy. I have Netflix and all but its not the same as adding it to my collection for realzies. Perhaps they can talk to Discotek Media who offer low cost but good releases; cause I'd buy it. |

I was really hoping for some kind of physical release, but this is still pretty good. I can't wait till September 2nd. I'm going to have to set aside a couple of days to watch through all of this stuff.

Tweeny Witches is currently available on Viewster in Europe (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland & UK).
I believe this is the first time Mind Game has been available in English anywhere other than Madman's OOP DVDs in Australia, likewise for Genius Party from Siren Visual. I can't say I've even heard of Princess Arete. |

Princess Arete puts an uncommon amount of effort into a medieval European setting. It has trade guilds, courtly love, and an understanding of the patterns of chivalry romance fiction. All that's just to set the stage, though, and it turns into a fairly low-key fantasy adventure. A good one.

This is really cool!
And I'm going to fourth the recommendation on Princess Arete. Of course, you should see all three of these, but Princess Arete has the least name recognition, and needs the biggest boost. This is a meditative adaptation of The Clever Princess by Diana Close, a feminist fairy tale that has been pretty much forgotten - except in Japan. A translation of the book quickly became a classic in a country starving for feminist voices. It is the story of how the titular princess is imprisoned by an evil wizard as his bride, and must figure out how to defeat him and live on her own terms. As Fronzel said, the level of detail put in the depiction of a medieval setting is exceptional. The film softens the more militant aspects of the book's feminism, leaving a more generally humanist impression. Some may question whether that is true to the spirit of the book but I think the final product is good regardless. Check it out! 13 years? Really? Man so when are we going to get Mind Game and Genius Party on DVD. Hey Discotek are you listening? We got Amazing Nuts though. Didn't expect Princess Arete. But it's good that they're getting exposure through Netflix. Though as a Netflix user I wish they'd improve their service. Like more variety of titles for streaming. Can't say much about the DVD loan part because I see that's dying.
Once again I was thinking of this and an today an article shows up regarding Netflix. |

I'd practically forgotten Tweeny Witches (or, like most people, somehow ended up getting it confused with Strike Witches, ick) since the days of digisubs, but it's got an interesting plot and visual style without getting TOO obnoxiously 4C-artsy.
As for the others....so, the whole studio's like that, then? |

Honestly, I'm not surprised to see Studio 4°C hitch their wagon up to Netflix streaming in Japan; I'm sure Eiko Tanaka had a hand in this somehow.

Seriously, I wonder when the Japanese will be able to truly get the business model of worldwide except Japan and that actually is working without stipulations. Of course, countries that have the government censoring/blocking the internet is the only valid excuse I'll buy (and the content of said title being in a specific country).
