NHK Reveals Full Results of Ultimate Gundam Poll

NHK revealed the results of its mega "All Gundam Poll" on Saturday during a program on the BS Premium television channel.

Voting took place between March 2 and April 20, and the poll received 1,740,280 votes. Of the overall voters, 22% were women and 78% were men. 30% of the voters were aged 20-29, 27% were aged 40-49, 26% were aged 30-39, 12% were aged 19 or younger, 5% were aged 50-59, and 0% were aged 60 or older.

Clicking on the titles in the top 10 for Best Anime Work (アニメ作品) brings up a chart of voter demographics. The votes for the #1 spot, the original Mobile Suit Gundam, were 78% men and 22% women, and 57% of the voters of that work were aged 40-49. The demographics were roughly the same for second place (Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam), but the demographics shift for voters of the #3 spot, Mobile Suit Gundam Seed. For that work, 44% of the voters were women, and 56% were men. Voters aged 20-29 made up 45% of voters for that work.

We're only listing the top 10 of each category here, but NHK lists the top 40 for Best Anime Work, the top 100 for Best Mobile Suit, the top 100 for Best Characters (in both Combined and Separate categories), and the top 40 for Best Gundam Songs.

Gundam is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, and a report last year by the Daily Sports newspaper reported that "big project" or projects are underway to celebrate the anniversary in 2019. Sunrise revealed Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative (Kidō Senshi Gundam NT) as the latest Universal Century anime last month. The new project will have theatrical screenings in November.
