Chofu Theater Hosts 10-Day Gegege no Kitaro Screening Event

A theater in Chōfu is putting together a 10-day GeGeGe no Kitarō anime screening event to commemorate the series' 50th anniversary. The AEON Cinema THEATUS Chōfu cinema will screen episodes from multiple GeGeGe no Kitarō anime series beginning on November 23 until December 2 as part of the larger "Gegege-ki" (Gegege Memorial) event taking place throughout the city.

The theater will sell tickets for the screenings in three blocks, each covering three or four days. Each day's showing will host four episodes from various seasons of the anime. The schedule for the first three days is:

Day 1 (November 23)

  • GeGeGe no Kitarō Season 6 Character Show
  • GeGeGe no Kitarō Season 6 episode 3
  • GeGeGe no Kitarō Season 3 episode 42
  • GeGeGe no Kitarō Season 4 episode 105
  • GeGeGe no Kitarō Season 5 episode 9

Day 2 (November 24)

Day 3 (November 25)

  • GeGeGe no Kitarō Season 6 episode 2
  • GeGeGe no Kitarō Season 5 episode 17
  • GeGeGe no Kitarō Season 6 episode 9

  • Staff talk show with Toshio Furukawa, Umeka Shōji, and Toei Animation producer Daichi Nagatomi

On November 30, the anniversary of series creator Shigeru Mizuki's death, voice actors Masako Nozawa (Medama Oyaji) and Toshio Furukawa (Nezumi Otoko) will appear at the theater's screening for a talk event. Voice actors Umeka Shōji (Neko Musume) and Yukiyo Fujii (Mana Inuyama) as well as staff from earlier adaptations are also expected to participate during the event. Over at the Tokyo Solamachi commercial building in Sumida, a special Kitarō cafe opened today. The cafe menu includes "Kitarō Hayashi Rice" and the "Nurikabe BLT Sandwich" among other themed food items and limited edition merchandise.

GeGeGe no Kitarō creator Shigeru Mizuki passed away in 2015. The sixth anime adaptation of GeGeGe no Kitarōp premiered in April, and is also celebrating the anime's 50th anniversary. The series is streaming on Crunchyroll, and is slated to have 50+ episodes.

The manga, which began in 1959 under the name Hakaba Kitarō, has also spawned several animated movies and two live-action films. The stories center on an inhuman boy who straddles the line between the human and supernatural worlds. Drawn & Quarterly publishes the collected manga in English.
