Sony Pictures to collaborate on film slated for 2018

Sega Sammy Holdings president and CEO Hajime Satomi said in an interview with international economic news website The World Folio on Wednesday that the company in planning to create a live-action and animation hybrid Sonic the Hedgehog film in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment. According to Satomi, the film is slated for 2018.

"Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved," Satomi said.

The CG-animated Sonic Boom series, produced by France's OuiDo! Productions, premiered on Cartoon Network in 2014 and was accompanied by two new games: Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric for Wii U and Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal for Nintendo 3DS. Another 3DS game, Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice is slated for September.

Sega released an original video animation (OVA) titled Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie in 1996. ADV Films released it on DVD and VHS.

Update: The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog previously reported in 2014 that the hybrid film was in the works from Sony and Marza Animation Planet, a wholly owned Sega Sammy Holdings subsidiary. Neal Moritz (Fast & Furious franchise) was said to be producing the film, and Evan Susser and Van Robichaux (both former members of the Upright Citizens Brigade sketch comedy troupe) were reportedly writing the screenplay.
