'Fake' Shin Megami Tensei Side-Scrolling PC Game Gets Free Download

Shin Megami Tensei: Synchronicity Prologue centers on Jack Frost, Pyro Jack

Atlus announced on Monday that it is releasing the Shin Megami Tensei: Synchronicity Prologue game as a free download for PC. The game featuring Jack Frost and Pyro Jack is available to download until December 24.

A promotional video for Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux, the Nintendo 3DS remake of Atlus' Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Nintendo DS game, teased the side-scrolling action game on Friday. However, the video stated that the game's release was a "lie."

Den-Fami Nico Gamer's ladybug team (Pharaoh Rebirth+) designed the game. Atlus clarified that the game "has no direct link" to Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux, but it describes the game as telling events that "possibly" happen alongside the Schwarzwelt task force's activities.

The Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux remake will ship in Japan on October 26, and Atlus USA will release the game in North America in early 2018.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux will use the original game as a base while also adding original content, and the ability to save at any time even while exploring dungeons. The game adds a new ending, and an original character Alex (seen in visual right) voiced by Megumi Han.

The original game shipped for the Nintendo DS in Japan in 2009, and in North America in 2010. In the game's story, a dimensional portal opens in Antarctica, consuming anything it touches and expanding to potentially threaten the Earth. The United Nations sends a task force to investigate the nature of the phenomenon. The player creates and names a character and explores dungeons within the portal. Like many games in the Shin Megami Tensei series, the player explores the dungeons in a first-person perspective, and may bargain with demons to recruit them. The original game had three possible endings.
