Shinkai himself pens novel shipping on July 18

The official website for Makoto Shinkai's new anime film Weathering With You (Tenki no Ko) announced on April 12 that the film is getting a novel adaptation. As with other novel adaptations of his works, Shinkai himself is writing the novel. The novel will be available digitally and in print on July 18.

The film will open in Japan on July 19. Shinkai confirmed that the film will get a worldwide release, and releases have already been decided for North America, Europe, Asia, and South America.

In the film's story, high school student Hodaka leaves his home on an isolated island and moves to Tokyo, but he immediately becomes broke. He lives his days in isolation, but finally finds a job as a writer for a shady occult magazine. After he starts his job, the weather has been rainy day after day. In a corner of the crowded and busy city, Hodaka meets a young woman named Hina. Due to certain circumstances, Hina and her younger brother live together, but have a cheerful and sturdy life. Hina also has a certain power: the power to stop the rain and clear the sky.

Shinkai (your name., The Garden of Words, 5 Centimeters Per Second) is credited with the original work, and is also directing and writing the film's scripts for CoMix Wave Films. Masayoshi Tanaka (your name., anohana, The Anthem of the Heart) is designing the characters, Atsushi Tamura (The Cat Returns, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin) is the animation director, and Hiroshi Takiguchi (The Garden of Words, Ajin) is the art director. Story Inc. is credited as producer, and TOHO will distribute the film. RADWIMPS is performing the film's theme song and providing the music for the film.
