Anticipated Anime Film Suzume Celebrates its Canadian Premiere at TIFF Bell Lightbox as Part of TIFF Next Wave Film Festival
TORONTO — TIFF is excited to present the Canadian premiere of the young-adult fantasy feature Suzume, by Japanese auteur Makoto Shinkai, on April 13, 6:30pm at TIFF Bell Lightbox. The screening of this highly anticipated anime feature film is part of a special event celebrating the upcoming TIFF Next Wave Film Festival, taking place April 14–16, ahead of the film's theatrical release in Canada on April 14.
Tickets are available starting today for TIFF Members and TIFF Under-25 Pass holders, and to the general public on March 31. A box office sensation earning $103 million USD in its Japan debut, the Japanese-set coming-of-age story Suzume follows a determined teenager on a mission to save her country on the brink of disaster. Able to see the supernatural forces that others can't, it's up to her to close the mysterious doors spreading chaos across the land. Suzume had its international premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival, marking the first Japanese anime feature film in competition at the festival in two decades. Described as “vastly mythic and quirkily comic” by The Guardian, and based on the massive earthquake disaster that occurred in Japan in 2011, Suzume follows the protagonist's perilous journey that awaits, as the fate of the country rests on her shoulders. The Sony Pictures Entertainment film is distributed by Crunchyroll in North America.
