Virtual Singer KAF Celebrates 5th Anniversary

Pioneering Virtual Singer KAF Celebrates 5th Anniversary

Japanese Artist Looks Back On Major Milestones While Preparing For Even Bigger Accomplishments

Japanese artist KAF is a virtual artist trailblazer. The teenager was among the initial creators to embrace a digital avatar to present herself to the world, while still delivering powerful art through the time-tested beauty of the human voice. KAF celebrates her fifth anniversary this month, taking a second to reflect on all she has accomplished in such a short amount of time.

KAF is also looking forward to her next big moment — becoming the first virtual singer to play an arena show, happening this January in Tokyo on January 13 and 14 2024. The first night will be with her group V.W.P (Virtual Witch Phenomenon) and then hosting a solo show featuring an assortment of big guests. One performer already confirmed for the historic performance — voice actor Ayane Sakura, who has previously collaborated with KAF on the song “Sunrise” and is responsible for the voices of Ochaco Uraraka on My Hero Academia, Secre Swallowtail on Black Clover and Fiona Frost on SPY x FAMILY. There's even more names coming, though. See the event page here.

Debuting in 2018, KAF caught attention quickly via her YouTube channel, where her digital avatar uploaded a mix of cover songs and originals highlighting her dynamic vocal presence. Keeping her true identity and image hidden to place the emphasis on her art, KAF kept expanding her sonic world, dabbling in new styles and linking up with a wide variety of celebrated producers, including Brainfeeder's Hakushi Hasegawa, beloved guitarist MIYAVI and prolific electronic artist Mondo Grosso. Forbes Japan named her one of their “30 Under 30” to watch in the country in 2022, a huge honor for the burgeoning performer.

While her popularity initially came from the internet, KAF blazed a new path by becoming one of the earliest virtual singers to bring her music to the real world. She performed live at a wide variety of venues across Japan, showing how the digital could intersect with the IRL. KAF achieved a feat in late 2022 when she became the first virtual artist to perform at Nippon Budokan, a historic venue previously seeing Japan performances from the likes of The Beatles, Cheap Trick and many more.

To commemorate her fifth anniversary, KAF will hold a YouTube livestream for members of her channel on October 22 at 10 p.m. Japan Standard Time. Besides reflecting on a half-decade pushing the art of virtual singing forward, she will also share a variety of big news, offering a hint of where she will go next in her already thrilling career.
