But yes, this particular action by the UN is stupid; at least it won't amount to anything happening in the end. Seriously, the UN needs to put some effort into establishing a substantial military arm so that it can handle the severe existing threats that mark the world, rather than get bogged down with the terror that is free expression.
Indeed. |

once again the UN is flexing it's weak political muscles by going after something easy. Namely this and another recent "let's see what we can do today? Hmm Genocide? No. Starving Children, No, OH WAIT, a cyber online game is using OUR LOGO! LET'S GET EM!" Next thing you know Hedaki Anno will be getting letters from the UN saying he has to edit them out of Evangelion

Ah, good, drive the industry underground so that it can continue to flourish while Japan's prisons get stuffed with perverted otaku and the nation loses tax revenue on all that primo merchandise. Maybe the Japanese Ero-gamers and American Marijauna Posessors can have a conference about ridiculous laws that don't help anyone.... You know, if Japan actually bothers listening to them. Really, Japan has shut itself off from the world before and done fine. Maybe Japan and the US can team up and leave the UN together.

While I think the UN is wrong in this case, I still think it does a lot of good and I think people who want their country to leave the UN are just ignorant of how much it has actually achieved and of how many countries would do anything to be in your shoes.
The UN is basically a lot of organisations under the same name, maybe this ones called the 'lets crack down on minor "issues" because we're lucky enough our area doesn't have any major issues to deal with' |

F*CK YOU, UN!
Let Japan keep their hentai and worry about, oh I dunno... THE WAR IN THE F*CKING MIDDLE EAST! I mean, geez. You think banning rape games is more important than preventing ACTUAL RAPE. You should be ashamed, UN. |

These constant pushes for bans in Japan are getting very tiring. I hope that the Japanese government will be able to keep fending them off and hold fast to their support for the human right of free expression in this case.
That said, I understand the UN's concerns. But outright banning this material (and any fiction in general) would be a mistake. |

Yeah, ban it, since we all know no women like hentai. And certainly not rape or BDSM hentai.

"to ban the sale of video games or cartoons involving rape and sexual violence against women which normalize and promote sexual violence against women and girls."
Small addendum "because we know there are no games that depict those same acts against males and boys." this is just screaming sexism...If it had anything to do with any sort of equality it would have been stated as "to ban the sale of video games and (cause or made perfect sense there) cartoons involving rape and sexual violence." And people wonder why the term "femi-nazi" was coined~ |

*sigh*
I know the staff at ANN wants to keep things as tightly related to anime as much as possible, but in this regard, I think a bit more should have been supplied to the readers. For I doubt they'll read the attached PDF file in the article. It doesn't appear the UN wants changes in anime only, but practically all aspects of Japanese culture when dealing with women. A choice in surnames when married? Removing a 6 month waiting list? Hey, why not just turn Japan into the United States. We've all seen how well that works. It appears these idiots who petitioned the UN are applying their opinions without regard to Japanese culture. While I do believe women are treated differently, it also appears to me they're treated with much more respect than in other parts of the world. Of course, this is only based on readings from the internet and books, so there may be a slight bias. The unethical treatment of women happens in every country, regardless of wealth. Even in the US, we idolize pop stars who wear clothing designed to specifically entice sexual fantasy. But let's dismiss this simply because these same pop stars have the ability to wed when they want and pick a last name of their choosing. Once proud, the UN has fallen from grace at trying to do too much to please everyone. One day, they'll realize this is only a dream. Kind of like that whole "world peace" belief some people think can happen. It'll be interesting to see how Japan reacts given the country seems to be under fire (again) for its culture not matching what the UN thinks it should be. |

Uhh...don't hate me for this, but I actually kind of agree with banning sexually explicit games/manga.

People keep pointing to Japan's low crime rate. I'm not as convinced that the statistics used to claim this are that accurate. Japan is a very self conscience nation and it wouldn't surprise me if many incidents of sexual harassment and rape, are not reported because of when it is reported, it is met with complacence and indifference by police, for many reasons but one of not making their precinct look bad to the politicians elected to that area, so victims just don't bother and live with the injury. Just ask the parents of Lindsey Hawker, who have been to Japan several times and only got lipservice with no arrest and conviction yet.

Not more tripe. They tried this with Columbine and they failed miserably.
If they succeeded, Japan would lose a nice bundle of tax revenue that could be used to educate the younger generation and foster respect for women. Violent media and porn do NOT lead to more crime. They reduce crime by providing an outlet for stress. |
