Crap. If I had known there'd be a contest, I wouldn't have pre-ordered my copy. I'm surprised Vertical's able to give away that many of them, though.

You can enter any way, then if you by some miracle win, cancel you order or if you happen to win and its alradey sent then send it back. Is that so hard?

I seriously doubt that giving away ten copies is going to put the company in the red...

Ah, damn, accidentally hit enter, not noticing that "Submit" was already highlighted. It does say that I can enter once a day, though, right?

Anyway, if this can save me twenty-five dollars (or fifteen dollars if I wait for the probable paperback trade), then I'm all for it in spite of the fact that I've never really won a contest before.

Cowboy: The check's probably cleared by now, and I don't wanna wait.

Kagemusha: True, but that's still $250 MSRP, and Tezuka's a tougher sell here than most mangaka. I applaud Vertical's generosity, though.

Hellkorn: I doubt it's gonna go lower than $18-$20 if they ever release it in TPB. Kirihito has more pages than a book of Buddha or Phoenix.

...you mean $25 dollars, for the hardcover. In any case, they've already got an audience built in from Buddha, now I suppose they're going to try to sell it to manga fans (I don't see how anyone could pass up a deal this good). And yeah, you might as well go with the hardcover because like gatsu said the SC isn't going to be all that much cheaper.

Hey guys,

Just wanted to clear up a misconception that the release is hardcover. I got a copy a week or so ago for AoD and it's a paperback. Vertical's website says both, but it's definitely already a TPB.

Still, it's a pretty schweet deal at $25, as you get about 4 books worth of content.

Ah that's what you were getting at. But seriously, it isn't like they're some local comicbook shop, and if they want to improve sales amoung manga-readers this is one of the better plans.

You can always send it back and get it refunded if you win.

I thought Jarred was exaggerating, but this sucker is huge. It's like getting 3 books of Phoenix for the price of 1.5 of them. I'll once again compliment Vertical on their generosity.

BTW, I should warn ANN's Taiwanese columnist that, if he(she?) was considering purchasing the book, it doesn't depict your country in a positive light. (To sum up the content, think Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom's portrayal of India.) I don't think Kirihito was meant to be racist or offensive, but it
would have been nice if it provided a more "balanced" view of the culture, instead of going for the stereotypical "black market" route. Anyway, this is one of those times when Vertical should print those disclaimers which were in front of the U.S. editions of Astroboy and Cyborg 009, as Tezuka's portrayal of black South Africans isn't exactly progressive, either. (Maybe for its time, though...)

Yeah, it has the steriotypical black caractures, yet it's arguing against racism. It's like saying Mark Twain was a racist because of the way Jim talks in Huck Finn. And the Taiwan thing, don't you think your being overly sensitive? Do we have to have a disclaimer whenever a negative portrayal of a country is presented? What's next, putting a disclaimer before "Deliverance"? I'd hope most people are intellegent enought to realize that the country isn't really like that. The country serves as a setting, and to provide a "balanced view" would have thrown the pacing off.
