It's also been a good week for the Blu-Ray carrying PlayStation 3, which for the month of January, saw it's sales(According to the NPD) rise and overtake those of its compeititor, the XBOX 360, but still fell a few thousand units short of Nintendo's Wii.
Oh, and you know you've lost any shot you had at making a comeback for any product, when Wal-Mart isn't carrying you. |

I HATE format wars. I always pick the wrong side. Oh well, time to throw my HD DVD player into the pile of failed Technologies, along with the Betamax, minidisc, DCCs and the rest. Now when's the PS3 price going to drop again?

Apparently the 80GB model is on it's way out. So that may get a price cut. Then Sony most likely will release their rumored 120-160GB Model. |

Well this pretty much settles things. Any hope that was left for HD DVD is now nothing. Perhaps there is a niche that they could corner, but I have no idea what that would be at this point.

The Warner bullet was the kill shot; it gave everyone an excuse to take their own shots. The Wal-mart near me has a four-sided display, with the front and sides taken up by Blu-ray and the back taken up by HD DVD, so in my experience they've always displayed Blu-ray more prominenty.
I bought a Toshiba HD-A3 shortly after the Warner decision because of the price cut and because I wanted an upscaling player, and so far I've enjoyed it. I've bought five HD DVDs but in the same time period I've bought 11 DVDs and a DVD box set. I didn't feel the need to buy only HD media because I didn't spend much on the player; I'll buy stuff I want in HD DVD, while I'll continue to mainly buy DVDs. The only HD DVDs on my radar are Appleseed: Ex Machina, Justice League: New Frontiers, and maybe Beowulf. Some people don't seem to realize the reason stores are having to choose is because the profit is so small based on how much space they're taking up in the stores; if they were selling well enough both formats could and would exist side-by-side. The question is going to be whether Blu-ray sales will still disappoint even after HD DVD is out of the game. I suspect when HD DVD shelves get downsized, just as much shelf space will be reclaimed by DVD as by Blu-ray. |

Hi Def media will remain less than 1% of the market. Most people are happy with upconverters. This will doom even Blu Ray to the same scrap heap that consumed Laser Discs. 100 Million standard DVD players in the US alone will dominate the market for at least a decade, if not more.
So now I can put my HD player on top of my LD player in the basement. Being a pack rat, I'll probably never throw them away.

I think DVD will be phased out in the next couple of years just to make people buy the blu-ray players,and its possible that people will end up buying them if you consider that the home video market is strong enough to make more money during the winter months than movie theaters.Plus companies won't have to release in two formats which will probably save a lot of money,but of course Blu-ray will be replaced by some kind of super Ipod, that downloads movies saving on all mass production costs, in a few years.

Actually, I stumbled across something that made me think 'why the heck didn't they start out pushing these instead of expensive HD DVD combo disks?'. The product is called 3X DVD, and it's a subset of the HD DVD spec designed to put a movie on a 9.4GB DVD to decrease cost (it costs as much to make as a standard DVD). They would have to lower the bitrate or decrease the resolution to 720p, but with the majority of HDTVs not capable of 1080p it would be a way to actually sell an HD version at the same price as a DVD version (or include an HD version in with a DVD version) and still make decent money off it. The downside is that right now only HD DVD players can play 3X DVDs, and it would be akin to a basic DVD offering (little to no special features because most of the disk would be taken up by the movie). But I think the HD DVD group should've pushed this 3X DVD at DVD prices (which the studios would probably be on board, since it wouldn't cost them much money) and give the 1080p market to Blu-ray. Then when the market allows and the cost of manufacturing HD DVDs is acceptable, use 3X DVD as the 'new DVD' and battle Blu-ray with HD DVD. I'd be very interested in 3X DVD since my TV's resolution is 1366x768, but I guess they decided to push the luxury format (HD DVD) instead. Maybe they could rename it "HD DVD 720p" and try it out. |

i really doubt it. once hd-dvd is officially dead, the blu-ray consortium will start emphasizing the advantages over dvd by offering cheaper players and discs. |

I think once Blu-ray copy protection is cracked for keeps then we'll see Blu-ray become truly popular. That combined with cheaper discs & burners will pull everyone in just like it forced the conversion from cds to dvds. De-css is the greatest thing that ever happened to the dvd industry. I wouldn't be buying dvds if it weren't for it (and the modern day libdvdcss).

I still haven't bought my first Blu-Ray disc yet even though I've had a Blu-Ray player for a few months. Oh well, I have much love for my PS3 anyway. The fact that it was completely backwards compatible with all my PS and PS2 games is what sold me on the 60GB model. That's why I don't anticipate buying a Blu-Ray disc anytime soon, but it's good to know that they will be more widely available at Wal-Mart, who usually has good prices on stuff like that.
