Wow, I can't believe I'm reading this, and really kinda bummed out. The original Gurren Lagann series got not one, but TWO English dubs, and it seems the the movies won't have even that. Unless, of course, Syfy decides to expand Ani-Monday to 3 hours as a special event for these movies. Two hours would mean a ridiculous amount of edits, even for Syfy!

Interesting.. If I recall correctly Henry Goto was one of the original Pioneer LDCA folks (later Geneon USA).

Well F that.

He was in fact. I can't remember not seeing his name in the credits of any of their shows that I have.

What? No dub? That seems ridiculous to me considering the show already has one with a well established cast. At no dub, I think I'll just stick to my Bandai sets of the TV series as is since, even though the second movie is kind of awesome, it doesn't add enough to the show to warrant having it in a slightly different format.

Now, had there been a dub, and seeing how I actually bothered to buy all three GL sets in LE, I know I'm the type of person who'd get these too were they dub but because I've already seen them sub at my friend's house, what's the bonus for me? Parallel Works? Seen 'em. Booklet? Don't care. Postcards? Care only slightly more, but not enough to warrant buying them.

If they ever dub them, I would buy them though. I think it'd be different if this were a show that wasn't dubbed to begin with, like a sub-only show getting a sub-only movie, but this is different to me.

All cool and good, but this quote has me worried on Blu-ray releases.

Quote:
Yes, they will. However, we will have to carefully look into the release timing and the price since Japan and North America share the same region code.

I hope they're not seriously considering doing 2-3 episode blu-rays for 40-60 dollars. That crap won't fly in American.

Now that I think about it, this all seems like another Bandai Visual. Have fun going bankrupt and selling off your overstock to rightstuf.com.

Well, I know that I'll be buying the limited editions. Though I kind of wish that they would be available on rightstuf as well. (Would have loved to save the extra 10%, but alas.)

I'm interested in where they are going with this and future releases.

Wow, so they're really releasing it themselves.

Well, all the best to them. I'd assume that they'll tread carefully, knowing how Toei and Bandai Visual's attempts to sell in North America turned out. But you never know, really.

If anything, they should follow a path similar to Kadokawa Pictures USA.

Not liking this strategy of only selling at one place. I'm trying not to be too pessimistic on prices, but that sort of thing usually means you'll pay through the nose.

At least put it on other e-vendors like RightStuf or Amazon. I would speculate that the majority of people who actually still buy DVDs primarily shop there. Best to sell your product where your customers are.

Meh. I plan on waiting for a dub in any case. Maybe by then it'll be available on RightStuf.com.

There won't be a dub. Aniplex made it pretty clear.

I'd like to support the movies but I also liked the dub cast so I can't bring myself to buy these.

I know right. If Japan ever seriously enters the U.S. market (instead of this one or two dvds every now and then), starts releasing dvds themselves, and starts charging their prices ... the U.S. retail market for anime might take a huge hit.

They should have given more thought to so many countries having the same blu-ray region code. Regular dvd may have a ton of region codes and give some people headaches ... but it works! They charge their price and we charge our price.

Will you be licensing future titles to licensees, or will all future titles be released this way?

Absolutely. Aniplex's goal is to deliver wonderful works that are made from many staff's passion and hard work to as many fans as possible. We are always appreciative of our local business partners and licensees for their great work, and we would like to keep good relationships with them to bring more Aniplex titles to North American fans.

This is the first time I've seen the word "absolutely" used in such a nebulous way. So does this mean they are cutting companies like Funimation out of future licensing bids? I know Funimation has licensed Kuroshitsuji and that is an Aniplex title. Will that be the last one?

Good to see another licensing company, but if they want to compete against Funimation, they better present their product in a competitive way. If the price is too high, it is a no-buy.

But - I must hear more Hynden Walch and Bridget Hoffman :/

Oh well...

Anyway, I hope they've heard of a former anime distributor called Bandai Visual...

I would guess that Aniplex will still offer shows for license to Funimation or whoever and if they don't want them then they'll look into releasing it themselves. I could be wrong on that though.
